Right before Shedeur Sanders got that life-changing draft call from the Browns, he picked up another one—this time from someone claiming to be Saints GM Mickey Loomis. The voice said New Orleans was about to draft him. Shedeur was hyped… until he found out it was just a prank. Turns out, the “GM” was actually Jax Ulbrich—son of Falcons DC Jeff Ulbrich—goofing off after stumbling on Shedeur’s number.

If reports are accurate, Ulbrich’s son, Jax, took the number from Ulbrich’s iPad and used it to prank Sanders during the draft. Funny? Maybe. Harmless? Not exactly. Turns out, the NFL didn’t take that prank lightly. In fact, the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero confirmed that the NFL fined the Falcons $250,000 and DC Jeff Ulbrich $100,000 over the leak of Shedeur Sanders’ phone number.

The NFL disclosed that the fines were for “failing to prevent the disclosure of confidential information distributed to the club in advance of the NFL Draft.” Shedeur, who was projected to be a first-round top QB prospect was ignored by all 32 teams on the first day of the 2025 NFL draft. Right after that went down, the 23-year-old former Colorado QB was waiting to hear his name on day 2 of the event.

As per the early mock drafts, the Saints were projected to pick Shedeur, given Derek Carr’s shoulder injury and uncertainty on his return. However, as Shedeur and the Sanders family were waiting for the QB’s name to hear, a video surfaced on social media where the QB was spotted receiving a call from someone impersonating the Saints’ GM, Mickey Loomis.

The caller told Shedeur, “We’re going to take you with our next pick, man, but you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer, man. Sorry about that.” Well, not the kind of call Shedeur was expecting. A confused Shedeur didn’t know what had just happened with him and asked the crowd that gathered for his draft party, “What does that mean?”

As it turned out, the Saints’ GM was none other than the Falcons‘ DC’s son, Jax Ulbrich. Jax later publicly apologized, admitting that what he did was “completely inexcusable, embarrassing, and shameful.” Besides, the Falcons also released a statement confirming that the Ulbrich family is working with the organization to address last week’s matter.

What’s your perspective on:

Did Jax Ulbrich's prank on Shedeur Sanders go too far, or is the NFL overreacting?

Have an interesting take?

Finally, it’s an end to Shedeur Sanders’ prank call drama

Honestly, the NFL dropping a fat fine on the Falcons over a prank call? That’s a first. We’ve seen teams lose picks for spying or deflating footballs, but a fake draft call from a coach’s kid? That’s new and one of a kind. However, even before the NFL fined the Falcons and Jeff Ulbrich, his son, apologized while sharing a post on his social media handle.

“I’m so sorry I took away from your moment, it was selfish and childish,” Jax Ulbrich said in his Instagram post. “I could never imagine getting ready to celebrate one of the greatest moments of your life, and I made a terrible mistake and messed with that moment. Thank you for accepting my call earlier today. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.” Well, after the Browns drafted Shedeur in the fifth round with the 144th overall pick, the QB confirmed that it didn’t really have an impact on him.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Falcons also released a statement admitting that the Ulbrich family is working with the organization to participate in community service initiatives in relation to last week’s matter. The team wrote in the statement, “We appreciate the NFL’s swift and thorough review of last week’s data exposure and the event that transpired due to it.”

“We were proactive in addressing the situation internally and cooperated fully with the league throughout the process, and accept the discipline levied to Coach Jeff Ulbrich and the organization. We are confident in our security policies and practices and will continue to emphasize adherence to them with our staff, whether on or off premises.” In the statement, the Atlanta team also mentioned how Jeff Ulbrich’s son came across the draft contact phone number for Sanders.

Falcons DC Jeff Ulbrich didn’t even know what Jax had pulled off until it all blew up later—but now that the NFL’s handed out fines to both him and the team, it feels like the drama’s finally wrapped. Shedeur’s moving on, and it’s Browns time now.
