TreVeyon Henderson’s health has become a major concern for the New England Patriots, even though the team’s running game has been strong through the first eight weeks of the season. The second-year running back missed the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks due to an ankle injury before sitting out last week’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins because of an illness.

And now, Henderson could reportedly miss multiple weeks. While it was initially reported that the running back was sidelined due to an illness, Henderson has revealed that he experienced unexplained neurological symptoms that required him to spend some time in the hospital.
“I would like to provide an official statement regarding the medical condition I’ve been experiencing,” wrote Henderson in an Instagram post. “Recently, I experienced an unexpected and unusual medical emergency involving a series of unexplained neurological symptoms that required hospitalization for several days. During that time, I underwent extensive medical testing and evaluation. While the results of my comprehensive medical testing have come back positive and reassuring, the cause of this remains unknown and unexplainable.
“I will continue to work closely with specialists and physical therapists to focus on my recovery, as these symptoms have affected my strength, coordination, and some of my physical functions. I am committed to doing everything necessary to return to full health. My health and long-term well-being remain my foremost priorities.”
In the week leading up to the Dolphins matchup, the Patriots listed Henderson as a non-participant because of an illness, and he wasn’t on the injury report the previous day. However, New England subsequently ruled him out for the Week 8 matchup for the same designation, as he didn’t travel to Miami with the team.
Now, as he revealed his health condition, support has started to pour in for the 24-year-old running back.
“Blessings and prayers my brudda🙏🏽,” wrote the Patriots wide receiver DeMario Douglas, while Will Campbell wrote “Love u brotha,” and quarterback Drake Maye dropped a simple “❤️.”
Meanwhile, TreVeyon Henderson’s fans also chimed in to offer support and pray for the running back, as one person wrote, “Praying!!! 🙏,” while another added, “god speed brotha 🙏🏼.”
Henderson’s 2026 season has already been disrupted before this medical issue. He suffered an ankle injury before the regular season started and had not practiced since August 24, heading into the season opener against the Seahawks. That prompted the Patriots to rule him out for the Week 1 matchup.
He returned and played through the early part of the season, but the latest illness caused him to miss Week 8. Through six games, Henderson has 52 carries for 203 yards and one touchdown, averaging 3.9 yards per carry. He has also caught five passes for 45 yards, giving him 248 scrimmage yards. Evidently, the numbers have dropped compared to his rookie season.
In 2025, Henderson rushed for 911 yards on 180 attempts, while scoring 9 touchdowns.
But in the 2026 season, the Patriots started managing his workload, especially due to his injury issues. Through the six games he has played in, Henderson had only one run of 15-plus yards on 52 carries in 2026. That’s particularly notable because he had 11 explosive runs during his rookie season. He was averaging only 3.9 yards per carry.
Meanwhile, Rhamondre Stevenson had become the clear lead back. Over the four games entering Week 8, Stevenson was playing 64.8% of New England’s offensive snaps. In Week 7 against Chicago, he played 68% of the offensive snaps. And when the Patriots ruled TreVeyon Henderson out of the Dolphins game, New England essentially went with Stevenson and Corey Kiner.
Stevenson played 45 snaps, or 76.3% of the Patriots’ offensive plays, while Kiner played 11. Kiner actually gave the Patriots some valuable production, ripping off runs of 20 and 10 yards. New England finished with a 45% rushing success rate in the game. But for now, it remains to be seen whether Henderson will return to play in the 2026 season.
In his statement, the running back thanked the Patriots organization and everyone who has supported him during his illness.
“My wife and I are deeply grateful for family and loved ones, the New England Patriots organization, my agent, my medical team, teammates, and everyone who has offered prayers, encouragement, and support. We respectfully ask for continued prayers and privacy as we focus on my health and recovery.”
For now, Henderson’s health remains the priority, with the Patriots likely to exercise caution rather than rush him back. While there is no clear timetable for his return, the hope will be that the young running back can make a full recovery and eventually get back on the field this season.
