Essentials Inside The Story
- Mike Vrabel faced the media on Tuesday and spoke about the Dianna Russini controversy.
- The coach gave an impromptu statement to the reporters.
- Russini has resigned from her post at The Athletic.
The New England Patriots opened their voluntary minicamp on Monday, but the spotlight wasn’t just on football. Head coach Mike Vrabel kept a low profile in the immediate aftermath of the controversy involving former The Athletic insider Dianna Russini, opting not to face the media right away as questions swirled around him. But Tuesday marked his first public acknowledgment of the situation.

While the initial plan was for two Patriots players to speak to the media, the coach gave an impromptu statement to the reporters. He said:
“Thank you for your patience that you’ve shown in a personal and private matter for me and, obviously, everybody involved. I know that’s not easy for you, and I respect that, and I appreciate your efforts in doing so,” Vrabel said. “I understand I could have addressed you guys sooner, but it was important to me to have a conversation with the players, which I did yesterday very candidly as we began our offseason program, which everyone is excited to be a part of.
“It was never my intention to have (the players) speak to you or address you before I did, so I asked (Patriots head of media relations Stacey James) to come today and to talk with you. I also don’t want to take away from the weekend of the draft. This is an important time for us and our organization, and the excitement and the joy that those players are going to have that we bring onto our football team.
“With that being said, I’ve had some difficult conversations with people that I care about, with my family, the organization, the coaches, the players. Those have been positive and productive. We believe in order to be successful on and off the field, you have to make good decisions. That includes me. That starts with me. We never want our actions to negatively affect the team. We never want to be the cause of a distraction.”
He further mentioned that he had spoken with the team and preferred to keep the details private. When reporters asked follow-up questions about Russini, Vrabel chose not to answer them and instead mentioned that he wanted the attention on the upcoming draft and his football team.
His comments relate to Page Six, which published photos of Vrabel and Russini together at the Ambiente Hotel in Sedona. The photos reportedly showed both holding hands, embracing, and sitting together in a pool. Since then, both have pushed back against the narrative surrounding the situation.
In a statement at that time, Vrabel said, “These photos show a completely innocent interaction, and any suggestion otherwise is laughable. This doesn’t deserve any further response.”
Russini, meanwhile, addressed that the photos did not show the full group of six people present at the gathering. However, amid the ongoing investigation from the outlet, she eventually submitted her resignation from her role at The Athletic.
“I have decided to step aside now—before my current contract expires on June 30. I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career,” she mentioned in an official statement last week. She resigned on April 14.
Before taking over the New England Patriots, Vrabel spent six seasons (2018-2023) as head coach of the Tennessee Titans. Now back with the franchise where he once won three Lombardi Trophies as a linebacker in the 2000s, he led the Patriots to a Super Bowl 60 appearance last season. Meanwhile, Russini has covered Vrabel’s journey closely, dating back to his time in Nashville and continuing through his tenure in New England.
#Patriots HC Mike Vrabel said he’s had difficult conversations with family and those close to him, and wanted to speak with players first before addressing the media — which is why he waited until today.

With the 2026 NFL Draft less than a week away, Vrabel has confirmed his focus is going to be on the franchise moving forward. But this brings up an important question. Is Vrabel’s position with the Patriots in danger because of the controversy?
Will the league take any action against Mike Vrabel?
Vrabel reported back to the Patriots as the team began the first phase of offseason workouts. However, it has been reported that the coach will not face any discipline from the NFL. League spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed this on Monday. The reason?
It has been decided that he did not violate the league’s personal conduct policy.
According to that policy: Conduct that is illegal, violent, dangerous, or irresponsible puts innocent victims at risk, damages the reputation of others associated with the game, and undercuts public respect and support for the NFL. We must endeavor at all times to be people of high character; we must show respect for others inside and outside our workplace; and we must conduct ourselves in ways that favorably reflect on ourselves, our teams, the communities we represent, and the NFL.
That said, the New England Patriots have not addressed the matter in any other way. With the draft inching closer, all their attention is set on the future of the franchise.
