Essentials Inside The Story

  • Kirk Cousins finds himself at the center of the buzz
  • Old ties with Sean McVay make this more than just a random fit
  • Multiple teams are in the mix as well

After moving on from the Atlanta Falcons, Kirk Cousins is officially one of the most seasoned quarterbacks on the market. While several teams are eyeing him, the Los Angeles Rams have emerged as a fascinating landing spot.

Coach Sean McVay recently hinted at a potential reunion, citing their history together in Washington. And the team’s GM doesn’t have a different opinion. On Wednesday, Rams General Manager Les Snead addressed the situation during an appearance on the Up and Adams podcast. He didn’t shut the door on the idea at all, saying:

“You know what, that is a possibility. I think in all of this, I think Kirk’s got opportunities, and our approach with the backup QB situation has been, you know what, give those players some space. They’re trying to figure out what’s next for them. And then we will, you know, and if something, you know, if it’s a win-win, then we’ll make it work if not.”

The connection between Cousins and the Rams isn’t just random. During the recent NFL Owners Meeting, Rams head coach Sean McVay didn’t hide the fact that he’d love to team up with Cousins again.

The two previously worked together years ago in Washington from 2012-2016, where McVay was the offensive coordinator, and Cousins was his rising star under center. Under McVay’s guidance, Cousins developed into a productive QB, throwing for over 4000 yards for three years in a row. Current reports suggest that Cousins is actually open to the idea of taking a backup role in LA.

“You know, the win of Kirk is, hey, the experience he’s had in the league, the experience he’s had with Sean and that offense. So if, if we were to have to go to Kirk, there’s, you know, that experience is going to, right, probably at a macro level, be more net positive than net negative,” Snead added.

This move would make complete sense when you look at his career; he has spent years playing in versions of the McVay offense under coaches like Kevin O’Connell and Zac Robinson. Furthermore, his stats also show massive career numbers. He has a total of 44,700 passing yards and 298 touchdowns across 174 games.

With a solid 66.7% completion rate and a career passer rating of 96.8, he’s exactly the kind of steady hand a team like the Rams would value, especially after Matthew Stafford’s uncertainty.

Now, the only question that remains is when.

Sean McVay admits to his interest in bringing in Kirk Cousins as the Rams’ backup QB

The Rams are already running behind. As the team officially looks for a backup QB in the market, their list of candidates has already been shortened. Veteran candidates like Joe Flacco and Carson Wentz have already been scooped up by other teams, and the Rams are finding themselves in a bit of a tight spot.

But this doesn’t mean that the Rams are completely out of options. Two big names, Kirk Cousins and Jimmy Garoppolo, are still floating around in free agency, and it sounds like head coach Sean McVay has his eye on both of them.

During a chat at the NFL’s Annual League Meeting, McVay didn’t hold back when asked about the team’s depth behind starter Matthew Stafford. He made it clear that adding an experienced arm to the locker room is a top priority, and referred to the possibility of bringing in one of the two veterans.

“We would love to be able to have him (Garoppolo). There are some other guys that are out there, but we do need to be able to add another guy into that room… obviously, people make some of the connections with Kirk (Cousins). Kirk is as influential as anybody in helping me… get to L.A. in the first place.” McVay noted.

While Garoppolo knows the Rams’ system well after spending the last two years in Los Angeles, the idea of a reunion with Cousins seems to carry a lot of weight for the head coach. But then one major problem for the Rams in acquiring Cousins is that he is linked to several other franchises, including the Raiders and the Jets. Even though those teams are busy drafting or trading for new talent, a veteran like Cousins is still a hot commodity.

Who the Rams decide to go with is something we will know once the team starts actively shaping its roster.
