John Harbaugh is used to it now. A poor Baltimore Ravens‘ defense is what we’re talking about. Through the first four weeks, the Ravens gave up the most points (33.3 per game) and second-most yards (406.8 per game) in the league. Fast forward to Week 5, and we’ve got the same story.

The Ravens dropped their fourth game of the season after a 44-10 blowout loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium. And the loss immediately sparked calls to fire defensive coordinator Zach Orr. But Jeff Zrebiec, senior staff writer for The Athletic, reported that coach Harbaugh doesn’t see firing Orr as the solution.
The Texans’ offense dominated throughout the game, piling up 417 total yards (250 through the air and 167 on the ground). The Ravens, on the other hand, could only muster 207 total yards, with just 44 on the ground, given that they’re without Lamar Jackson. C.J. Stroud had a near-perfect day, completing 23-of-27 passes for 244 yards and throwing four touchdowns.

The Texans’ quarterback had no trouble finding his favorite targets. He connected smoothly with Christian Kirk and Dalton Schultz. Kirk finished with four catches for 64 yards, and Schultz added five receptions for 60 yards. The running game wasn’t far behind either: Nick Chubb rushed for 61 yards on 11 carries, and Stroud chipped in 30 yards on one carry, almost the same as Baltimore’s Derrick Henry.

With all that happening, you could easily imagine the pressure rising on the Ravens’ defensive coordinator. But then again, John Harbaugh and the front office aren’t making any moves just yet, signaling that they’re sticking to their plan despite the rough outing. On top of that, the head coach still has confidence in his DC and his players. After all, it wasn’t just a poor performance that’s troubling the Ravens’ defense.

John Harbaugh has to tackle the injuries as well
“I have confidence in all our guys, including [Defensive Coordinator] Zach [Orr] and our players, our coaches,” Coach Harbaugh said following a 37-20 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4. “I watch our guys every day. I watch how they work. I watch how well they coach. I’m in meetings, I watch the meetings, I know our schemes that we’re running. I know the soundness of what we’re doing. I understand what we’re up against from week to week and play to play.”
The signs are hard to ignore: Baltimore’s defense is springing leaks, and it’s showing up early in the season. 13 weeks are still on the table, no doubt. But the reality is clear: Injuries have complicated everything on that side of the ball. The Ravens’ entire defensive line was injured heading into the Week 5 game against the Texans.

Inside linebacker Roquan Smith and cornerback Marlon Humphrey missed the game with hamstring and calf injuries, respectively. And both are reportedly expected to miss multiple games. Adding to the trouble, left tackle Ronnie Stanley (ankle) and safety Kyle Hamilton (groin) also missed Sunday’s game. And to make matters worse, Nnamdi Madubuike is already out for the season with a neck injury.
Long story short: The defensive issues are clear in Baltimore. But when John Harbaugh said that firing Zach Orr won’t change anything, let’s just say Coach Harbaugh has got a lot to back up his statement. It’s tough to say, but with the Los Angeles Rams lining up next, things don’t seem to get better from here.
