The Giants and quarterback decisions in the draft? Yeah, it’s kind of a touchy subject. They just can’t get it right. Flashback to 2018, when Eli Manning was clearly nearing the end of the road, and the Giants had a golden chance to find his successor. But instead of grabbing someone like Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen, they went with Saquon Barkley at No. 2. Great running back, no doubt—but let’s be honest, that didn’t exactly solve their QB problem.

Fast forward to 2019, and it looked like they finally learned their lesson. This time, they grabbed Daniel Jones at No. 6. The Problem is, a lot of people thought he’d still be sitting there later in the first round. But the GM at the time doubled down with, “You don’t get cute with a quarterback.” Bold words. But yeah… fast-forward again, and the quarterback drama in New York still wasn’t exactly over.

Now that Brian Daboll and Co. have picked Jaxson Dart after trading up in the first round, their decision has acquired some mixed reactions. Some believe it was a necessary step to secure their QB room for a long time, while others suggested that they should have gone for Shedeur Sanders. However, as per the NFL Insider, Jordan Schultz, Daboll was a key driving force behind trading up to pick Dart. Why?

Well, there are a lot of reasons behind this bold decision. For starters, Daboll and GM Joe Schoen find traits reminiscent of Josh Allen. And no, we aren’t talking about Allen’s build and tank-like ability when scrambling. In fact, Schultz noted that “[He is a] culture builder and competitor—reminiscent of Josh Allen in terms of guys wanting to play for him. He may be 21 years old, but leads like he’s 35,” Schultz noted.

Well, both Daboll and Schoen have worked with the Buffalo Bills earlier, and they’re pretty aware of the way Allen leads his team. And they might have seen the same traits in Dart as well. Speaking of which, Schultz also noted that one of the many reasons Daboll picked Dart was because of elite leadership skills. Because let’s be real—it wasn’t just about arm talent—it was about the guy behind the helmet.

“Dart was a key cog helping Lane Kiffin recruit the portal at Ole Miss — watching film, making phone calls, texting, organizing dinners,” he reported while also noting that the “Giants felt even more comfortable with Dart once the helmet came off.” Coach Lane Kiffin once called Dart a “99 overall in leadership,” and it shows. At Ole Miss, Dart wasn’t just the quarterback—he was the glue.

Then there’s this thought that Dart has the ‘perfect‘ mentality needed in a major media market, which somewhat echoes this thought that he’s definitely way more mature than his age.

What’s your perspective on:

Did the Giants finally get it right with Jaxson Dart, or is it another QB gamble?

Have an interesting take?

And then there’s the arm strength. Because of course, organizing dinners won’t win you Super Bowl. But Brian Daboll reportedly saw it firsthand and was sold. Dart’s deep-ball touch drew comparisons to Bo Nix after his NFL Combine performance, and his 2024 stats back it up: 4,279 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and a 69.3% completion rate. He’s not just a gunslinger—he’s accurate, composed, and improving every year.

But the most telling detail? It’s Dart’s desire to win. We aren’t just talking about football. As Jordan Schultz noted, “(Dart) has to win at everything. Not just football. Can be a card game, ping-pong, pickleball, basketball, charades, doesn’t matter. The dude has to win.” Long story short: while there are some questions why the Giants picked Dart over Sanders. But one thing’s for sure: Brian Daboll and Co. came to the draft after doing their homework.

Now’s the big question: who’s going to be the QB1 for the Giants?

Brian Daboll confirms Russell Wilson will be the Giants starting QB

At the beginning of the NFL offseason, the Giants had to address their quarterback issues. After parting ways with Daniel Jones, the Big Blue was left with Tommy DeVito, which, of course, is not your starting QB. The rumors surely linked them with Aaron Rodgers. But instead of playing waiting games, the New York team decided to sign Russell Wilson (on a one-year $21 million deal) and Jameis Winston (on a two-year $8 million deal).

Now that the Big Blue has drafted Jaxson Dart, it looks like the Giants fans have to wait a little bit more before seeing Dart’s throws. The reason? Well, Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen confirmed that Russell Wilson will be the starting quarterback of the team entering the 2025 season. “Russ will be our starter, and that’s how it will be once we get started here in the spring,” Daboll confirmed to media.

“The process of developing a quarterback is just that. So we’re going to do everything we can to develop him and bring him along.” Wilson signed a one-year deal with the New York team after a brief stint with the Steelers in the 2024 season. While talking about the decision to select Wilson as their QB1, Daboll added experience, play time and “medals on the wall” as the major factors.
