The last couple of weeks have been tumultuous for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team failed to get past three points in Week 2 against the New England Patriots amid a disappointing offensive performance, but managed a 30-27 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3. Now, as they prepare to face the Cleveland Browns on Thursday Night, quarterback Aaron Rodgers wants himself and his teammates to take accountability.

“The accountability I hold these guys to is what I hold myself to and I expect them to go out and execute at a really high level and it’s based on the preparation, but you know I’m not trying to embarrass anybody out there,” said Rodgers ahead of the Thursday Night Football game against the Browns.
There is already evidence of why Rodgers is emphasizing preparation and execution. Pittsburgh’s offense struggled badly against New England, finishing with just 235 total yards while Rodgers completed 23-of-39 passes for 187 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception.
The Steelers converted only two of 12 third downs and were held scoreless for most of the game. At the same time, the offensive line failed to protect Aaron Rodgers. The Patriots sacked him four times, as the quarterback failed to make explosive plays.
Out of 67 total offensive plays, only one gained more than 20 yards. Subsequently, the criticism was evident. Rodgers, however, acknowledged the struggles after the loss.
“Yeah, I’ve got to look at the film. We just didn’t get into a rhythm. We had too many three-and-outs again. I didn’t feel like there was anybody that had an exceptional game out there. We all played below our standard,” he said.
A week later, however, the offense looked considerably different against Cincinnati. Pittsburgh produced 411 total yards, 22 first downs and 30 points, while converting seven of 12 third-down opportunities. Rodgers also delivered one of his strongest performances of the season, completing 19 of 34 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns.
The improvement was not limited to Rodgers. Jaylen Warren ran for 127 yards on 17 carries, while Pittsburgh’s offense generated 138 rushing yards overall. Rodgers also connected with Roman Wilson for a 38-yard touchdown and Ben Skowronek for a 23-yard score before finding DK Metcalf for another touchdown in the second half.
At the same time, two of his three passing touchdowns gained 20+ yards, that too, in the first quarter of the game.
Still, Rodgers isn’t treating one productive afternoon as proof that everything has been fixed. After the Bengals game, he pointed out that the Steelers had produced only one decent offensive performance and said they needed to “stack” a few more.
That becomes even more important against Cleveland because Pittsburgh has had very little time to prepare. The Steelers are working with a compressed Thursday schedule, with head coach Mike McCarthy explaining that the team is effectively squeezing six days of preparation into three.
That said, the Steelers are currently 2-1 after their Week 3 win over the Bengals. The Browns, meanwhile, have managed to win back-to-back gams after opening the season with a disappointing defeat. Now, the division rivals will meet on Thursday Night Football this week.
