The Pittsburgh Steelers pulled off a successful tush push in Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings. But they did it in a completely different style than the Philadelphia Eagles. Philly hands the ball to Jalen Hurts every single time they call the play. But Aaron Rodgers? Not so much.

At 41, and on a one-year deal, he’s not about risking his “last season” just for a few extra yards. Which is exactly why he just stood back and let his teammates handle the dirty work. Smart, calculated, and very much in line. Fast forward to now, and the Steelers’ veteran DT, Cam Heyward, just addressed Rodgers’ different approach to the tush push.

Well, they talked about (Aaron) Rodgers, and they said ‘He was in this Ashton Jeanty stance,” Heyward said, referring to Rodgers’ standing during the Steelers’ tush push. If Jeanty’s collegiate career at Boise State has taught us anything, then it’s that the running back has this knack for standing almost straight up in the backfield instead of the low, bent-knee running-back stance you see everywhere.

To add some intrigue, the Las Vegas Raiders’ rookie not only logged his first 100-yard outing in Week 4 (138 yards on 21 carries against the Chicago Bears), but it was his signature upright stance in the backfield that really grabbed the headlines. So when Heyward said that people are comparing Rodgers’ stance to Jeanty’s, then let’s just say he isn’t wrong.

With Rodgers upright in the backfield, the Steelers dialled up a tush push on 3rd-and-1 inside Vikings territory, midway through the fourth with the score at 24-14. The play worked, moving them into a goal-to-go situation, but the drive stalled. A few snaps later, Mike Tomlin settled for a field-goal try on 4th-and-3. And one thing was clear from that play: Whenever Pittsburgh tries to tush push, Rodgers won’t be under the center.

Connor Heyward will do the quarterbacking during tush push

When Connor Heyward powered through on the tush push, it felt like a preview of things to come. After all, even down to 10 men, the Steelers still converted, proving that the play would be back on the call sheet next time short yardage popped up. And to make it even more interesting, the 26-year-old tight end looks completely at home executing it.

I’m extremely comfortable in that,” Connor said of running tush push, per the Steelers’ website. “We only called it once, but if we were to call it again, I’m ready for that. It’s something that we’re just gonna keep building off, I bet.” While the broadcast showed us Aaron Rodgers merely as a spectator as the tight end executed the play, Connor later admitted that the 41-year-old QB instructed him on how to take the snap.

On top of that, the fourth-year TE also admitted that the Steelers were trying to execute the play for a while. “We talked about it in training camp, but we started repping it Week 1 and just started grooming it up and dressing it up and getting everybody on the same page,” he said. “Then coach (Mike Tomlin) asked me if I was ready for it and I told him I was.”

The Steelers will now face the Cleveland Browns after the bye week. While nothing is clear, we can surely expect Heyward to run the tush push again.
