The Colin Kaepernick story will always be one of the NFL’s saddest turnovers. From a Super Bowl finalist to getting left out without a team, the earth has revolved faster for the former 49ers quarterback. After staying inactive for over 6 years, last week Kaepernick revealed his wish to be a practice QB for the New York Jets, in a letter to the team’s general manager. Kaepernick could be the missing piece the Jets needed amid their struggles, after Aaron Rodgers’ departure due to his Achilles injury. So, many fans were over the moon with the possibility of seeing the veteran once again in the NFL.

Sadly, as much as we hate to say it, Kaepernick’s NFL comeback is likely not happening. Not with the Jets at least. Here is a breakdown of the three possible reasons.

Why Colin Kaepernick won’t make a comeback?

A force to be reckoned with from a young age, the 49ers drafted Kaepernick in 2011. He reached the peak of his powers in 2013, leading the team to a Super Bowl final that year. Despite falling short against the Baltimore Ravens, many considered Kaepernick to be the league’s best quarterback, even during the Tom Brady era. But things took a bad turn amid Kaepernick’s kneeling episode and further protest during NFL games. Following the incidents, Kaepernick was left out of the team roster in 2016 before his contract ran out the following year. What seemed like the beginning of a legendary career, had to end untimely.

A few days ago Kaepernick sent a letter to Joe Douglas, revealing his wish to serve the team in practice during their hard times. He even mentioned that he’s been practicing just like a professional, putting in early morning work at the field and in the weight room. However, the team did not respond with a positive note. In a recent episode of The Pat McAfee Show, analysts discussed why it’s all but over for Kaepernick’s Jets dream.

“The Jets went out and they signed Trevor Siemian. It’s like hey, we’re moving on, we got a guy. Like it’s just not gonna happen and it’s unfortunate. Especially that market, I just don’t know how he could go there and have it”, one of them pointed out. “XFL feels like a perfect proving ground”, the show host Pat McAfee added to that.

According to the analysts, the Jets have made up their minds on Kaepernick for a few things. Firstly, they have signed Trevor Siemian as a backup QB. Secondly, they are unsure of what the former could deliver after staying out for nearly seven years. And thirdly, they probably haven’t taken it seriously as the letter failed to make a mark on Jets management. It’s almost certain that we may never see Kaepernick again in the NFL. But, the Jets are not going through a good time given the lack of an experienced QB. So, there’s a chance that the rejection may come back to haunt them.

Although the Jets have moved on from Kaepernick fairly quickly, they can’t from their concerns. After a promising start to the season, things have gone completely wrong for them. After back-to-back defeats against the Cowboys and the Patriots, they are in deep water. Looks like the miss of Aaron Rodgers is costing them in the long run, and there’s nothing Zach Wilson and co. can do about it.

Jets have their biggest challenge so far coming up next Monday when the Kansas City Chiefs visit the MetLife stadium. Kansans are having the time of their lives, and Patrick Mahomes and co. are running the show in a champion’s manner. With the possibility of having Taylor Swift in the stand, MetLife won’t feel like home for the Yorkers at all.
