The Patriots were a laughingstock of the NFL in 2000. They were losing games left and right and registered a 5-11 record in the season. But Bill Belichick discovered Tom Brady the following year, and the rest is history. Belichick won six Super Bowls with the franchise and marked an era of unprecedented, untouchable dominance. Players lovingly called him ‘Doom’, because every time he walked around the field, it was the end signal for the opposition.

Fast forward to 2023, the Patriots are one of the worst teams in the league again. Not a laughingstock, but rather a sad fallout this time. They are 1-5 in the season and recently managed to lose against an Injury-riddled Raiders. Some fans have demanded the removal of Belichick. But the franchise has reportedly landed a contract extension with the head coach, surprising them. And maybe for a good reason.

If you have been following the NFL since the early 2000s, the first player you knew about was probably Tom Brady. Similarly, the first coach you heard about was probably Bill Belichick. The duo joined hands to earn the Patriots six Super Bowls and one of the biggest turnarounds in the league’s history. Belichick’s Patriots truly re-defined the modern-day NFL.

But Brady is past now. Yet, Belichick remains significant. Probably more than ever, after the horror show that’s unfolding this season with every passing game. Brady, in a turn of events, is a co-owner of the Raiders who handed his past franchise their latest defeat. And that was an addition to the four already incurred earlier in the season. A significant part of the fanbase wanted the team to get rid of the 71-year-old head coach. Not only that, even a few analysts as well as past players thought it was the end for the legend.

Can Bill Belichick revive the Patriots dynasty?

It was the 2001 NFL season, and a few had hoped that a 24-year-old sixth-round draft pick quarterback from the past year would change history forever. Newly promoted head coach Bill Belichick couldn’t stop their continued downfall in 2000. The team finished 5-11 and at the bottom of the division. Things, however, started becoming serious when the team pulled out a 180-degree in the 2001 regular season, quite literally. After an 11-5 run to the playoffs, the dominos fell one after another and the franchise went all the way to win its first Super Bowl ever. A dynasty began that day.

The 2023 season has largely been the same as 2000 for the 6 time Super Bowl champs. Brady has hung up his boots, and the Patriots are a world apart. They are 1-5 in the season, which is their worst outing after 6 games since the 1990s. But the contract extension can certainly change things. With his ever-independent approach, and now a bunch of time in hand, Belichick can start all over again. The Patriots have fumbled and fallen repeatedly, but now it’s time to get up. If you believe in Belichick, you know it’s just a matter of time before he finds his next Tom Brady. And we, as fans, can’t wait to see that happening. The phoenix will rise again!
