All things have an end. So did the career of the Chiefs‘ former QB, Alex Smith. However, Smith saw it coming with the Chiefs’ drafting an extraordinary player like Patrick Mahomes. During his initial years after being drafted as the 10th overall in the 2017 draft, Patrick Mahomes served as a rookie backup for Smith. The Chiefs’ QB was the star quarterback back then, a status that now Mahomes holds.

Smith had an experience of nine seasons with the all-rounder 49ers before he joined hands with the Chiefs for five seasons in his 16-season career. The Chiefs traded the Utah college graduate to Washington Redskins after their rookie player Mahomes displayed a mind-blowing performance in 2018. During the 2017 season, which Mahomes shared with Smith, it laid the foundation for Mahomes’ way to becoming the future NFL MVP.

Well, being traded to make a place for a rookie drafted just a year ago must have been tough for the QB, right? On the contrary, when Pat MacAfee asked him about the transition, Smith admitted he saw it coming. “I knew when they drafted him, time was running. And at that point anyway, I was in my 13th year.”

“You’re not guaranteed anything. Like if I played good football, they were go find somebody that could. So I knew that I had that year to kinda make the most of it.”

It is safe to say that the QB not only made the best of the season but also of his whole 16-season football career. When he was first drafted as a first overall by the 49ers in the 2005 draft, he was considered one of the finest picks by the Niners after 2011. When the player made a comeback after struggling with injuries, he led the team to their first divisional title and a playoff win since 2002. Well, Smith wasn’t awarded the ‘NFL Comeback Player of the Year’ in 2020 just like that.

Making it even worse, the QB developed sepsis, following which he had to undergo 17 more surgeries. Because of all this, he almost had to get an amputation. After all this, the QB declared his return in 2020 and played one more season for the Redskins, making us all remember once more why he is a legend.
