From planting 40,000 trees on her birthday to standing up against the Brazilian agricultural minister, Gisele Bündchen has left no stones unturned when it comes to the environment. 

Even as you read this, trees are still burning in the forests of Amazonia, Indonesia, and Central Africa; and it is sad to know that instead of changing for the better, the number of forest fires this year is even 10% higher than last year. Despite Gisele Bündchen’s 7+ years’ effort to fight against this terrible environmental impact, it needs collective effort, just as the 43-year-old UN environment goodwill ambassador stated.

Gisele Bündchen has been involved with environmental activism for just about a decade, but she first voiced her opinion in 2016 when she encouraged the world to keep Brazil and the Amazon rainforest in their minds, saying, “We are all connected; what happens in the Amazon affects not only Brazil but everyone across the world.“

In 2018, Gisele Bündchen expressed her shock at how much rainforest is cut down for cattle grazing and how these cattle are bred for consumption. She encouraged a vegan diet as it would be better for human health, animals, and the planet as a whole. Interestingly, it is through her that her ex-husband, Tom Brady, switched to a plant-based diet. 

In 2019, the Brazilian environmental activist posed her concerns about the devastating destruction of the Amazon rainforest by fires. The year reported 72,843 fires in Brazil, over half of which were in the Amazon region. Most of the fires are reportedly “human-lit” that fits “into an established seasonal agricultural pattern.”

Gisele Bündchen understands the gravity of the situation as she states, “We cannot close our eyes… I want to do something now before it’s too late.” The same year, she also got into a beef with her country’s agricultural minister, Tereza Cristina Diaz, who stated the supermodel was tainting her nation’s image.

In 2020, Gisele Bündchen celebrated her 40th birthday by planting 40,000 trees in her native Brazil. She could be seen with her ex-husband, Tom Brady, and their kids as they planted the trees together. Hats off to this down-to-earth woman who knows better than most people about lending a hand in environmental protection. In regards to her massive endeavor, she said, “Today we are going to use this same seed bank to plant 40,000 trees for my birthday and continue to regenerate nature. Gratitude!“

In 2021, she told ELLE that she always felt a deep connection to nature. But it was her 2004 trip to the Amazon Rainforest that changed her whole perception of environmental protection when she saw the first-hand impact of the destruction of the forests and its resources. She said, “After all, without nature, none of us could survive.”
