The Kaepernick couple initially resided in Wisconsin, the birth state of Colin before shifting to California when he was four years old.  The couple adopted the player from his biological mother, Heidi Russo, who was only 19 years old then. As Russo was searching for the right family to provide Colin with a loving home, it was a mutual friend who connected Heidi with the Kaepernicks.

In December 1987, he was adopted and Colin’s adopted mother recalled the emotional day by sharing her experience, “I just picked him up out of the carrier. But unfortunately, they lost their son Kyle and daughter Devon to congenital heart defects.  Colin’s success in his career as the quarterback along with his activism are deeply rooted in the values and support instilled in him by his adoptive parents.
