It’s a scene straight out of a football fan’s dream—or maybe a quarterback coach’s stress nightmare. Five quarterbacks. That’s how the Browns are juggling right now—Joe Flacco, the seasoned Super Bowl MVP; Kenny Pickett, fresh from a Super Bowl win with the Eagles; Dillon Gabriel, the NCAA’s all-time touchdown leader; Deshaun Watson, sidelined with a second Achilles tear; and Shedeur Sanders, a fifth-round pick with a top-three talent pedigree.
So, now that the Browns have started their rookie mini-camp, the couple of rookie QBs are out there fighting to prove that they belong there. And looks like the former Colorado quarterback has been comfortable and sharp in his first practice sessions. Why? Well, during the sessions, Browns insider Brad Stainbrook shared some clips of Sanders with his NFL team.
Now, get this, the guy was seen throwing passes and short throws in different drills to receivers at the camp. And that’s where it gets pretty interesting. Right after that went down, Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders hopped up on his official IG handle and shared one of Shedeur’s clips on his handle with a two-word message for his youngest kid. “Yes sir @shedeursanders,” he captioned his post.

The post showed Shedeur getting to work at his first Browns rookie mini-camp on Friday, May 9. The former Colorado quarterback practiced right alongside Dillon Gabriel, who the team grabbed with the 49th pick. Sanders and Gabriel entered the rookie mini camp together, but coach Kevin Stefanski sent the former Oregon quarterback the first reps on Friday.
However, the head coach noted that the order could change moving forward, and he isn’t paying any attention to who comes first. “I wouldn’t look into anything,” Stefanski said. “I think you’ll see the whole weekend, going through the spring, I mean, we don’t pay too close attention to who is in there first.” And when asked if the order could change, Stefanski simply stated, “I’ll see who.”
If the reports are accurate, Shedeur Sanders went second during the competitive drills following Gabriel and threw in both the 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills. With Watson probably out for the season following his injury, the starting position at quarterback is still uncertain. Well, the Browns will likely start with Flacco in the 2025 season.
But the way things are shaping up, Sanders and Gabriel will compete behind Flacco and Kenny Pickett. In the meantime, the 23-year-old QB’s been getting in solid work and sitting down for some key chats with the media.

Can Shedeur Sanders outshine seasoned veterans and become the Browns' next big quarterback sensation?

Let bygones be bygones for Shedeur Sanders
Shedeur Sanders’ draft week was anything but smooth. It included his name slipping from the first round to the fifth round and a prank call to make the best day of his life a total nightmare. But the silver lining? Well, Sanders had to wait until day three to hear his name, no doubt. But when the Browns selected him, the thrill was real. The former Colorado quarterback jumped into the swimming pool to celebrate his moment.
But fast forward, and Sanders is now at the Browns’ rookie mini-camp. “My job here isn’t to prove people wrong,” Sanders said in his first media availability Saturday. “It’s to prove myself right.” Besides, the guy stated that he isn’t focused on the past and even on the competition for a potential QB1 role that might knock on his door in a few months. The quarterback is currently focusing on proving to the folks in charge that the team making the call to pick him was the right call.

“I don’t even try to think about that day (of the draft),” Sanders said. “I’ve got practice today.” Yeah, about that practice, as per the Browns’ insider and reporter Brad Stainbrook, Sanders kind of had an upper hand at the rookie mini-camp. “Yes, it’s just the first day of rookie minicamp — but Shedeur Sanders looked sharper than Dillon Gabriel. This is only the beginning. The competition is real, and it’s going to be one of the stories of the season,” Stainbrrok stated.
ESPN NFL reporter Kimberly Martin reported that Gabriel and Sanders “split about three dozen reps in individual drills.” So yeah, at this point, both rookies are out there just trying to make the most of every rep. I mean, they’ve gotta earn their spot behind Flacco and Pickett—nothing’s guaranteed.
