Now that the NFL Draft is wrapped up, all eyes are on who’s wearing what. Cameron Ward? The guy’s rocking No. 1 after Warren Moon literally unretired it for him—yep, that Warren Moon. Then you’ve got Travis Hunter in Jacksonville snagging No. 12 and already lighting up jersey sales. Everyone’s grabbing numbers like they’re staking claims. It’s not just a gear—it’s an identity. And the rookies? They’re coming in hot.
Over in Seattle, Jalen Milroe went with No. 6, cool and clean. Meanwhile, Matthew Golden pulled a switch-up—ditched 81, scooped 22 before rookie camp even hit full speed. These guys aren’t just picking digits; they’re rewriting vibes. Will Campbell grabbed No. 66 like he’s already anchoring the Pats’ line. And when a number’s unavailable? Some rookies are out here trying to bring ‘em back from the dead. Literally.
Take Abdul Carter, for instance. The former Penn State edge rusher and the Giants‘ third overall pick had the nerve to ask one of the greatest linebackers, Lawrence “LT” Taylor, for his retired No. 56 jersey. Unfortunately, that didn’t turn out in his favor. Besides, the Giants’ rookie quarterback, Jaxson Dart, is yet to get his jersey number as well. The kicker?

Well, the former Giants‘ quarterback, Phil Simms, is all in to un-retire his No. 11 jersey that the team retired back in 1995. Believe it or not, but that’s true. On Friday, Simms stopped by on FanDuel, where he was asked if he would un-retire his No. 11 if Jaxson Dart or Abdul Carter wants it. “Hey look, I told my friends and some people around me, I would let him have it in a second,” Simms said.

You see, Simms being ready to un-retire his historic No. 11 jersey is a pretty big thing. We’re talking about the Giants’ legend, who spent 14 seasons in New York, slinging passes and stacking records. Simms led the New York team to two Super Bowl titles and snagged MVP honors in XXI. His No. 11 jersey? Retired in ’95. That number’s like a piece of Giants history—so when Simms says he’d un-retire it for a rookie, that’s a big deal.
But here comes the interesting part. Though Simms is ready to make this big decision if Dart or Carter wants to don the No. 11 jersey. But he later revealed that his wife and agent warned him not to un-retire it. But if you’re thinking that Carter is going to get another heartbreak—well, it’s too soon to say that. Simms finally noted that if not Dart, Abdul Carter will surely ask for his jersey, and it’s up to him whether he would probably give his jersey to the edge rusher.
And let’s just say the third overall pick will be nothing but honored to receive that jersey.
What’s your perspective on:
Should legends like Phil Simms un-retire their jerseys for rookies, or is history too sacred?

Will Abdul Carter get Phil Simms’ No. 11 jersey?
A few days after Warren Moon un-retired his No. 1 jersey for the Titans‘ 1st overall pick, Cam Ward, Penn State’s Abdul Carter, asked Lawrence Taylor for his No. 56 jersey. Taylor, who had been a part of the Giants for 13 seasons, retired his No. 56 jersey back in 1994. However, Taylor declined Carter’s request, stating that Carter should make his own legacy.
“He has to be the player that he is,” Taylor told ESPN in a phone conversation. “He can’t be another Lawrence Taylor. Well, he may be better than a Lawrence Taylor, who knows. But he has to make his mark. It’s up to him. And I’m hoping that he’s not thinking that, ‘Oh, I got shot down by LT.’ No, it isn’t like that, man. It’s, ‘Hey, I’m with you!’ I mean, I’m the guy that it takes two. I’m going to be two steps behind you and make sure you don’t fall.” But looks like Carter’s pursuit of a legendary jersey just took another turn.
Right after Phil Simms confirmed that he’d happily give his No. 11 jersey to Carter, the former Penn State edge rusher took to his official ‘X’ handle to respond to Simms’ statement. “It would be an HONOR,” Carter wrote. It’s still unclear if Simms and Carter would sit down to un-retire the historic jersey number.

But one thing’s certain: if Abdul Carter went on to don the No. 11 jersey, he’s going to put lofty expectations on himself entering his first year in the pros. Just like Cam Ward, who’s ready to start his rookie season with the Titans with No. 1 shining on his back.
