As if the Chiefs vs. Bills cut-throat 20-17 game was not enough, Mahomes’ meltdown gave the analysts plenty to work with. Known generally as a player with a composed demeanor, Patrick Mahomes breakdown was something rare and uncanny for many to witness.
With 1:25 left on the clock, Mahomes passed a swift one to Kelce. After this, the complication arose. Kelce, being in a tough spot, made a critical decision to lateral the pigskin to Toney, who scampered in for the would-be touchdown. It was scrapped at 1:12. On the sidelines, Mahomes was irate and his teammates were struggling to control him.

Matt McChesney throws shade on Patrick Mahomes

After going through the pass and Mahomes’ raging meltdown, veteran NFL player Matt McChesney was disappointed in the QB’s reaction, to say the least. Speaking to the hosts of ‘The Coach JB Show with Big Smitty,’ McChesney couldn’t help but be honest about his take on the recent performance of Mahomes. “What I’ve seen this year is bad. He does not look like the Mahomes of old,” opined the former Rams’ guard.

McChesney’s observation did not end there, rather it took a unprecedented turn. “If he makes the Pro Bowl this year, it’s all because of name. He is not one of the top three quarterbacks in the AFC,” asserted McChesney. Mahomes was selected five times for the Pro Bowl, and awarded Pro Bowl once, the same year he became the MVP. After an intensely luminous NFL career of more than 6 years, getting such a heavy comment is a whole other criticism in itself.

Patrick Mahomes and Co. Pro Bowl 2024

While McChesney holds on to his opinion, Mahomes and five of his team members are elected for the Pro Bowl. But Mahomes has yet not made it to the top 5 accumulators of the most votes. As per Tom Pelissero, leading this list is Dolphins’ QB Tua Tagovailoa. Mahomes teammate and dear friend Travis Kelce is at number 5 this season. However, strong contenders like Christian McCaffrey, Tyrek Hill, and CJ Stroud are also on the list to make it tough for Kelce to climb up the ladder.

This just further proves the point McChesney is trying to make. It is no secret that Mahomes is having a statistically weak season with 3398 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, a staggering drop from his recent previous year’s numbers. The chances of Patrick Mahomes making it to the Pro-Bowl seem challenging, given the striking contenders. The Chiefs would need to finish each game with a blazing record for that to be possible.
