The Patriots transformed into the NFL’s greatest dynasty after hiring Bill Belichick in 2000 and appointing Brady as the starting quarterback in 2001. Together, they secured six Super Bowl victories in their remarkable 20-year partnership, a feat unmatched by any other team in the 21st Century. The era came to an end when Brady left the Patriots as a free agent for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March 2020. Belichick remained as head coach until January 2024. The 71-year-old’s decision to move on after 24 years prompted reactions from numerous ex-Patriots players, including Tom Brady himself. 

On a Monday’s episode of “Let’s Go!” [Season III] co-hosted by former Arizona Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray, and the legendary NFL quarterback Brady himself, had two very special guests. Former Patriots teammates wide receivers Randy Moss and Julian Edelman joined the force to discuss the latest state of NFL affairs, including a valuable observation on prevalent coaching drawbacks that have failed to produce iconic players as themselves in recent times. 

Former Patriots teammates Tom Brady, Randy Moss, and Julian Edelman discussed the difference between older and stricter coaching practices that were prevalent during their time under head coach Belichick in comparison with the more lenient coaching tactics nowadays. Brady pointed out, “A lot of coaches are fearful of disciplining players these days because players have a social media presence.” This can lead to a player “lashing out” if the coach hurts his feelings or his actions do not bode well with him. This was unlike the case for coach Belichick, as “he never had that fear.”

The former Patriots receiver Julian Edelman chimed in, “I love Coach Belichick … I was a guy that flourished off of tough love, he was tough. Yeah, you hated him… But he made you better… That’s a product of Coach Belichick and Tom, having Tom at quarterback.” The Hall of Famer went on to shower praise on Bellachick’s work ethic and how once the players realized that the disciplining came “from an educated place,” they were bound to accept it.

Brady hails his former Patriots head coach for inculcating a culture of discipline and accountability among his players, which has ultimately helped them become the icons they are. “We’re all better players for having him as our coach. There was a level of accountability and discipline that he had,” Brady concluded. 

Bill Belichick is the epitome of a tough-love coach, and that approach definitely didn’t work for everyone over the years. However, his own work ethic and football knowledge made his approach much more palatable, and now players like Brady are able to look back and remember the good times.

Brady could not be him without Bill Belichick

Taking to Instagram, Brady expressed deep gratitude to Belichick for shaping not just his game but his entire career. He captioned the post, “I’m incredibly grateful to have played for the best coach in the history of the NFL… We accomplished some amazing things over a long period of time, many of which will be hard to replicate. he worked every day to help us… And, although we were successful, some of the greatest lessons I learned were in the moments where we faced the most challenging adversities…”

Brady’s post underscored valuable lessons learned and resilience instilled by Belichick, setting a lasting tone for the organization. While Belichick’s exit marks the end of an era, Brady wished him the best, emphasizing enduring gratitude for the transformative impact on his illustrious career.
