What a great day for Simone Biles! The gymnast won the all-around gymnastics title for the second gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics. And guess what? The NFL legend, Robert Griffin, too, poured into the celebration. But what echoed through his shoutout is how victories are often the results of a strong support system.

In Biles’ case, it was her husband, Chicago Bears star Jonathan Owens, who performed the hype man responsibilities. But how could not Griffin III praise the efforts of the program for allowing their player to be on a break to root for his wife?

Griffin III applauds Chicago Bears make room for Owens

On August 2, on witnessing Biles’ victory on the international platform, the NFL legend could not keep his calm. Griffin III then took to X, to share some thoughts about the gymnast. He started by showering Biles with praise, “This is one of the most decorated USA gymnasts of all time with thirty world championship medals with twenty-three gold.” And he took no time in pointing out all the other essential factors that helped the gymnast’s victory to fall in place. First things first, it was her husband Owens who accompanied her to the French capital all the way from the US.

But it would not have been possible if he had not received the green pass from the Bears program. Griffin III then sent a salute for Matt Eberflus’ army, “Chicago Bears who are in training camp right now, which are the most important practices of the year…well the Chicago Bears, they understood the assignment and they gave Jonathan Owens time off of training camp.” Owens has been excused absences from July 29 to August 3 and is expected to join the Bears camp on August 4. And what did the coach have to say about it?

Owens’ absence from Bears camp and support pays off

Eberflus stood in support of Owen’s decision to miss out on the Bears training camp. The HC confirmed, “Just because we respect the Olympics. That is a big deal. And he’s just supporting the one he loves the most. And I think that’s so cool that he gets to do that. We welcome that and it’s going to be awesome. Go USA.” After spending a season with Green Bay in 2023, the 29-year-old safety signed with Chicago as a free agent in March.

As he heads to his seventh season in the NFL, it was a tough call for Chicago to grant permission to the safety who missed out on the opportunity to participate in the Hall of Fame Game against the Texans. While you lose some, you win some too. Being away from his team, Owens got to witness his spouse winning gold in the all-around final.

The Bears star shared pictures as the couple ended their day with Biles grabbing another gold. Owens could be seen kissing his lady love as she flaunted the medal. A proud husband wrote, “Witnessing history every time you step on the mat Congrats baby on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history!!!! Just wow!!!! 8 of them!!!!! So thankful i was there to see it.” So even though he took heat for missing Bears camp, he got to bask in the glory of her high-flying success.
