Brenden Rice does not have to worry about his father’s expectations with the 2024 NFL draft being just mere weeks away. Despite having said and done all of it in his Hall of Fame career, Jerry Rice isn’t too keen on imposing his career learnings on his son Brenden Rice. In fact, he wants his son to run free in the upcoming NFL draft on his own, making all the crucial decisions by himself.

The All Facts No Break podcast gave Jerry Rice the perfect platform to clarify his expectations from his son with the 2024 NFL draft looming in the air. Rice opted to defer from the opinion that Deion Sanders popularized for his son Shedeur Sanders, banning him from opting in certain cities in the 2025 draft. “I wouldn’t do Brenden that way,” Rice confessed. The Hall of Famer held on to his opinion for his son to explore teams on his own. Yet, he has one team that he wishes his son to join, for which he would even “cheer for him.”

“This is all about his legacy,” Jerry Rice explained. Rice knew the obvious question was going to pop up: Brenden Rice joining the team with which his father created his legacy. The San Francisco 49ers. “I could see him you know as a Dallas Cowboy and I would cheer for him, to be honest with you because it’s going to be hard for him if he comes to the San Francisco 49ers,” Rice explained. The reason for him not preferring his boy to join the 49ers? The team and the fans demanding he prove himself since he is the son of the iconic 49ers WR Jerry Rice.

“There’s going to be so much pressure put on him. He’ll have to say, ‘This is not about what my dad did it’s about what I’m trying to accomplish now. I got to prove to my teammates that hey look I deserve to be that starter and I’m gonna do everything to help my team to win’,” Rice explained. Now, the real question boils down to: would Brenden Rice go down the prove myself path? Especially if he gets a chance with the 49ers?

The 49ers meet Brenden Rice

Brenden Rice made heads turn in his Combine week at the Lucas Oil Stadium. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound WR exuded command over his agility as he completed his 40-yard dash in 4.50 seconds and the 10-yard split in 1.55 seconds. Following the performance, the USC receiver met with the 49ers team. “We discussed topics of how I can get better and how I could contribute to the 49ers,” Rice explained. “And just be a part of what my dad left a legacy at.”

When asked about his opinion of the 49ers, Rice said, “The franchise is amazing. They have CeeDee Lamb who’s a great generational receiver, Dak Prescott, and Jerry Jones, he’s going to get them right, man. … Just to be a part of that organization would be amazing.”
