Tensions surrounding former Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s draft stock seem far from over. Now that Jim Harbaugh, after making his way out of the Wolverines to the Los Angeles Chargers, has carried many known faces from Michigan to Los Angeles, expectations were also held high for McCarthy. However, to everyone’s surprise, the quarterback will not join Harbaugh on the new team.

The new Chargers HC has been brought to the limelight with the accusation from NFL executives of “There’s a plan there.” The plan is about how, without drafting McCarthy, Harbaugh will be taking refuge in mind games to uplift his stocks. There lies a special motive behind this attempt.

Harbaugh as McCarthy’s spokesperson

When Harbaugh refused to show any interest in McCarthy even though the quarterback brought the Wolverines success at the national championship, the NFL executives started to doubt the coach. During league meetings, he even promoted the player as the best quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. Appearing at Michigan’s pro day, Harbaugh seemed to endorse McCarthy and stated, “I’ve been to a lot of pro day workouts and watched quarterbacks – that’s the best I’ve ever seen a quarterback do at a pro day.” Things have been going well thus far, but as soon as the Chargers HC expressed his intention of not considering McCarthy with the fifth overall pick, his act garnered suspicion.

An anonymous NFL executive who tried to decode Harbaugh’s instincts stated, “There definitely could be a little bit of an ulterior motive to get someone pushed to him, for sure. That would be a Harbaugh-type move. There’s a plan there, I would say.” Another executive informed us that the new Chargers HC has taken up the role of McCarthy’s unpaid promoter. But all this is because Harbaugh wants to land not McCarthy but Marvin Harrison Jr.

Harrison Jr., a non-quarterback, will be one of the first picks in the upcoming NFL draft. Since the Chargers are currently in a questionable position with the departure of two powerful wide receivers, Kennan Allen and Mike Williams, Harbaugh seems to have no interest in drafting a quarterback. Hence, McCarthy stands no chance of being on the Chargers HC’s wish list.

Instead, Harbaugh is expected to influence other teams to draft McCarthy, who is believed to be the fourth overall pick. In doing so, the coach’s path ahead will be clear, and having the fifth overall pick, they can easily bring in Harrison Jr. Even though Harbaugh has remained tight-lipped about his next move, he seems to be quite aware of the whole draft scenario to materialize his intentions.

Besides Harrison Jr., Harbaugh seems to be keeping his sights on another star wide receiver: Malik Nabers. With not much time left for the NFL draft, which is about to take place in April, it is time to see if Harbaugh emerges victorious in his mind game.
