Oh no! Tough times ahead of Florida Gators, it seems. Now that the HC Billy Napier enters his third season as the Florida coach, the first roadblock they face is one of the most daunting schedules in the country. Napier is in a hot seat since they will be playing nonconference games against Miami, UCF, and Florida State. That’s already an add-on to the Gators’ grueling SEC slate. But did this break Napier’s morale? Absolutely not! The Florida HC is all set to move forward with a ‘Bring it on, I’m ready’ kind of attitude.

The 2024 season is going to be a bed of roses with thorns kind of situation for Napier. All kudos to the Gators HC’s 11-14 start to his tenure that has fans riled up with high expectations from the HC. Napier is in the toughest position as his program is already in a deep doo-doo to gain traction. On top of that, here comes another deadliest hit, a grueling schedule. The host of the National Sports show, Jake ‘JBOY’ Crain raised a disclaimer for the HC on X, “The hardest truth Billy Napier has to deal with is Florida could be a good football team & go 6-6 with that schedule.”

With Napier’s debut came the Gators going 6-7 with a Las Vegas Bowl loss and 5-7 in 2023. Hence the pressure is immense on the Florida HC. Going by the records, it normally takes a 9-3 regular season, even in the SEC to reach the playoff. Even if the Gators come with a bang, them losing to three games in November will throw Napier’s tribe out of the SEC race. Why is it so certain that Florida will lose the three games? The slate is Texas, Ole Miss, and Georgia, all of whom have a better shot at the playoff. But losing hope is something that is not there in Napier’s playbook. But on whom is he pinning his high hopes? It’s none other than Graham Mertz.

Napier is counting on Mertz for his character and consistency

The Florida Gators had emptied the hope barrel until they were convinced they could draw a UNO Reverse. Thank heavens for Mertz, who is one of the most experienced QBs in the country. This is enough to pump up Napier with confidence when he dropped a big statement, “starting to look like what it should look like.” Mertz is back for his 6th and final season of college football. But what makes him so special? The former Wisconsin QB has tossed for collegiate highs, bringing a combined 43 starts, 8,308 yards, and 58 touchdowns to Gainesville in 2024.

Consistency is something that helped Mertz to win the hearts of his team members. Napier too holds high hopes for the player, “Graham has got character. He cares. He’s a worker…Graham, he earned every bit of it, and he earned the respect of his teammates with the way that he competed last year. He’s primed to have a breakout year here.”

The QB too focuses on his work, blocking all the hoopla that goes around him. He stated, “I mean for us, and I always tell my guys every day, I’m like, look we can focus on what people are saying or we can focus on what we are doing.” Will Mertz’s 72.9% completion rate be able to ace a victory for Napier’s Gators against the exhausting schedule?
