While some schools and conferences have been slow to adapt to the changing landscape, Colorado has emerged as a leader in embracing and empowering its players to benefit from NIL. 

Coach Prime’s take on NIL could come as a surprise to many. He recently revealed his insights on the current state of NIL in college football on his son’s YouTube channel. All these kids aren’t getting NIL. These kids are getting collectives.” The Buffs’ HC went on to explain the difference between NIL and collectives.

According to what Deion Sanders explains, a collective is more like an offering that is collected from the classroom which is in turn divided and distributed to players. He said, “NIL is a Name, Image, and Likeness… it’s not the day of NIL… It’s collectives. And that’s where it went wrong instead of staying right.” So basically, most of what the college football players are getting is a collective and not NIL. 

Are Colorado players benefiting from NIL?

Unlike players earning collectives, two of Colorado’s stars who are benefitting from NIL deals are Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. According to On3, they are among the top three college football players in terms of their estimated NIL valuations. Shedeur Sanders has an NIL valuation of $4.7 million, the highest in the nation while two-way star Travis Hunter has a valuation of $2.3 million, the third-highest in the country.

The success of Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter on and off the field has also stimulated Colorado’s reputation and visibility as a destination for elite talent and a program on the rise. NIL is transforming college sports in ways that were unimaginable a few years ago. Colorado is at the forefront of this revolution, and Sanders and Hunter are the face of this new era.
