After Jim Harbaugh left Michigan for the Los Angeles Chargers, the stage fell on Sherrone Moore who took the former HC’s head coaching role. A lot of eyes were on him as he became the first black head coach in Michigan history tasked with rebuilding the program’s coaching staff. But this time, it’s not recruitment or sports that’s putting him in the spotlight as he makes his way to Washington, D.C.

Jim Harbaugh attended President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address in 2016 as a guest of Michigan Rep. Justin Amash. On Thursday night, sports fans will find a familiar Michigan face at the State of the Union address as a special guest. Sherrone Moore is set to follow Harbaugh’s footsteps after his undefeated team won the National Championship for the 2023 season.

It’s election year as Biden and former President Donald J. Trump will contest for the position in November. According to a new report released by Detroit News, Sherrone Moore will attend President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address as a guest of US Rep. Debbie Dingell. The 70-year-old Congresswoman represents Ann Arbor as part of the state’s sixth congressional district. She made an appearance with a speech at Crisler Center in January when Michigan celebrated its national championship.

Dingell said, “Over the course of the last season the coaches and captains of the University of Michigan national championship team instilled the importance of teamwork across their entire program… I’m proud to host Coach Sherrone Moore as my guest for the State of the Union and am committed to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the importance of teamwork and bipartisanship in delivering wins for the American people.”

Sherrone Moore expressed his sentiments via MLive stating, “It is an extreme honor to attend on behalf of the University of Michigan, and I am excited to be part of one of the annual events in our governmental process.” Moore may not have begun his role as an official HC, but he’s been through everything and even served as interim HC during Harbaugh’s suspension last season.

Sherrone Moore is already a seasoned coach to fit Jim Harbaugh’s former role

Moore may not officially have been a head coach before. He joined Michigan in 2018 as a TE coach and was later promoted to OC in 2023. The same season, he also served as the acting HC where he led the Wolverines to a 4-0 record when Harbaugh was suspended from the sidelines. Sherrone Moore’s credibility will be put to the test once the season begins without Jim Harbaugh and his National Championship lineup.
