From being an undrafted free agent to landing on the retired list, former Michigan Wolverines OL, Trente Jones has experienced it all within a couple of days. After signing with the Green Bay Packers, Jones landed the fans with a surprise as he announced his retirement on Monday, May 13.

The rookie’s rights are still owned by the Packers if Jones returns to the NFL. Even though the 6-foot-4, 310-pound OL’s career in football has momentarily come to an end, this decision has opened other paths for him. Besides football, Jones curated a good reputation on social media platforms and owns a fan following of 350K.

Trente’s football journey comes to an end

Jones did come under Green Bay’s radar as he shined as a reserve right tackle this past season with the Wolverines. He allowed just three quarterback pressures in 139 pass-blocking snaps. But what stood out was his contribution to helping the Wolverines close out a 30-24 win against the Buckeyes. Going by reports placed by OverThecap.com, the Packers gave him a $10,000 signing bonus and guaranteed $100,000 of his base salary as part of a three-year contract.

However, Jones will no longer be running after neither the NFL opportunity nor the contract offered. But even after retiring, since the Packers retain the player’s NFL rights, they can have him back if he decides to return to football, keeping the Green and Gold in contention. Even though he claims to have hurt his back, other reasons might have propelled Jones to make the “best decision.”

Overview of Jones’ shortcomings and talents

As per NFL Network’s Lance Zierlein’s research, Jones had limited starts and relatively few offensive snaps by NFL offensive line standards. There are some shortcomings in his physical traits as he lacks the size and length teams look for at tackle or guard. Multiple times, he has been spotted losing reps due to poor positioning or overstepping his landmarks. But it is to be noted that despite this fact, Jones possesses the ability to bend and drive opponents off the spot or stall the rush with his punch.

Out of his strengths, Jones shot to the limelight for grabbing the Block M flag and waving it in the end zone of Ohio Stadium. It was only after Zak Zinter’s injury that he got a breakthrough into a starting role for the Big Ten Championship Game and College Football Playoff as a redshirt senior. Having back-to-back Joe Moore awards in 2021 and 2022 under his bag, the fans will miss his actions on the field.

Beyond football sport, Jones excelled in other fields as well. The four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree did outdo in academic and creative fields as well. The 23-year-old earned a degree in Creative Writing and Literature, and a Master’s degree from the School of Social Work. It’s now to be seen how Jones makes a comeback for his fans.
