Former Alabama Crimson Tide wideout Henry Ruggs III has been in great trouble. He had been charged with one count of DUI resulting in death. It was serious enough that led his former coach, Nick Saban, to share his thoughts about Ruggs’ misdemeanor. Instead of holding the player accountable, the former Alabama HC blamed his friends.

This left the coach exposed in a negative light as later Kelly King Jr. labeled Saban to be “full of sh*t” as a result of his reaction to the Ruggs’ situation. Earlier, Saban questioned the lack of guidance that led the player to end up in prison.

Even though Saban has moved far away from his duties as Alabama’s HC, it seems he still makes it a point to share his opinion. Like he did in the case of Ruggs. As he has been charged with a fatal DUI crash, instead of pointing out the player’s fault, Saban held his friends responsible as he claimed, “While he was drinking, and he had friends that could’ve told him, ‘You shouldn’t be driving; I’m not going to let you drive.'” This disappointed critics, and King Jr., being one of them, shared his opinion. He started with, “Nick Saban is full of sh*t.”

He further insisted that the only person responsible here is Ruggs himself, “If we wanna place blame, place blame on him for getting behind the wheel. If you want to go deeper than that, blame Top Golf for overserving him. But to blame his friends is insane.” The player is currently serving a 3-10-year prison term in a Nevada penitentiary. While Saban wanted to safeguard Ruggs using his friends as a shield, earlier, the absence of a leader bothered the former HC.

Saban stands in Ruggs’ defense

This was not the first time that Saban shared his opinion about Ruggs getting involved in a tragedy. Back in November 2021, when the wide receiver played for the Las Vegas Raiders, he was allegedly intoxicated while driving 156 miles per hour. This led to a fiery Las Vegas wreck and resulted in the killing of 23-year-old resident Tina Tintor.

Ruggs also faced a felony misdemeanor on a weapons charge when the police reportedly found a loaded handgun in the car that got struck in the accident. Later on in social media, Saban addressed the player’s deeds. Then, instead of believing it to be Ruggs’ blunder, the coach intended to shift the focus to something else. He started with, “If there was a player in Las Vegas who was drinking at 3 o’clock in the morning with his buddies and his girlfriend and somebody would’ve taken his keys away, it probably would’ve pissed him off…But would he be better off now, or is he better off where he was going 156 miles an hour running his a** into somebody and killing them…So what kind of friend were you, what kind of leader were you when you allowed the guy to do it?”

Following a prolific career three-year career at Alabama, between 2017 and 2019, Ruggs entered the NFL as the No. 12 selection in the 2020 draft. Being one of the major contributors to the Raiders’ special teams unit, as much as he suffered a setback, Antonio Pierce’s squad will not get over this loss soon.
