“His Arrogance Is Quite Sickening”: Deion Sanders Faces Scathing Backlash for Bizarre Justification to Ex-CU Prodigy’s Mistreatment

Dеion Sandеrs received quite a lot of support when Cormani McClain took digs at him. However, when the coach recently made some comments about Xavier Smith, it didn’t sit well with many. In fact, Smith’s revelations of the 2023 CU roster overhaul have led many to point fingers at Coach Prime & Co. for being careless of the young athlete’s mental well-being. “He was destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves. The way he did it, it could’ve been done with a little more compassion,” the Austin Peay player stated.
However, Coach Sanders shocked everyone when he reacted emotionally to Smith’s interview with The Athletic and ended up mocking Smith’s current team, including one of his teammates, DB Jaheim Ward. Ward got involved in the issue to defend his teammate. Sanders re-shared Ward’s career stats on social media with the caption “Lawd Jesus.” While his post caused quite a stir among analysts and fans, Deion Sanders has denied the allegations of attacking anyone.
According to Pro Football Talk via NBC, Coach Prime attempted to clarify his actions, but his statements were quite contradictory. Initially, he said, “I was bored,” but later denied it, saying, “I did not do that.“

“I was bored,” expressed Sanders in his interview with Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today. “I was bored, and I didn’t say anything hurtful. I don’t attack people.” He further explained his interpretation of the controversial post and claimed it was rather a reaction to the staggering statistics presented. “I try my best to refrain, but like when you posted like stats, I said ‘Lawd Jesus’ like dang, he really went at him, and like he really shot him,” he remarked.

Similarly, Sander’s son Shеdеur also made a comment about Smith being “very mid“. While people may have forgiven him given his young age, his coach/father was expected to handle it professionally, with perhaps a touch of compassion. Additionally, Colorado receiver Kaleb Mathis also got involved in this issue. He posted a video of getting the better of Xavier Smith in a practice session. This action led to a lot of back-and-forth.
So these confusing statements by Coach Prime raised some negative sentiments among the college football community, citing the inappropriate nature of his comments toward a college football player.

One user didn’t hold back and bluntly stated, “His arrogance is quite sickening at times.” Another aimed Sanders’ coaching abilities, accusing him of prioritizing his own interests over the long-term success of the program: “He’s not a leader of men and isn’t concerned with CU’s long-term best interest.”

Back in 2023, Jason Whitlock said something similar. He was of the opinion that Deion Sanders was being worshipped by his team and that his success as a black man was bringing more pride than humility. “All pride is a curse. Pride hides truth. The idolaters are fueling the arrogance that will undermine Deion’s ability to sustain success at Colorado,” he stated.
Further, another user stated that Coach Prime was “all about his kids” and he “will jump to the NFL with his kids” once Shedeur and Shilo enter the draft next year. Similar sentiments echoed throughout the thread, as another X user criticized Coach Sanders’ leadership. “He sells himself as a leader & mentor of young men but instead of leading, he got down in the dirt & followed. I don’t think he understands that there’s more to leadership than just being the center of attention.”

Another user called out Sanders for what they perceived as hypocrisy in his use of Christianity and labeled him “a big-time phony.” In fact, in January 2023, The Freedom from Religion Foundation sent Colorado a letter raising concerns about the coach’s references to Christianity and that players could be pressured to pray during their meetings.
As criticisms of Sanders’ behavior intensify, it remains to be seen how he will address the mounting pressure and whether he will take steps to mend the rift with his fans. What do you think?
