The anticipation surrounding the NFL draft is palpable, particularly for J.J. McCarthy, the former Michigan Wolverines quarterback. In a recent appearance on the YouTube show All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn JohnsonRon Rivera delved into McCarthy’s journey, a journey that could lead him to the heights of success or the depths of disappointment, depending on the outcome of the draft.

Given the circumstances, McCarthy has been labeled a “gamble pick.” His future is shrouded in uncertainty, yet numerous teams are vying for the opportunity to secure him.

It’s time for some in-depth analysis of whether McCarthy possesses the talents of being among the Top 5 in the upcoming draft. Johnson takes charge, expressing his lack of certainty as far as the Michigan quarterback is concerned. As per Johnson, only playing eight games and throwing balls less than 10 times does not confirm his position among the best. The point is then taken up by Rivera, who claims, “I think, to me that is the gamble pick. Yes, if you hit it and you’re right you’ve got a guy that’s there for 10-12 years. If you don’t like you said you know we’re out on the streets.”

Therefore, any team considering McCarthy must undertake a comprehensive evaluation and gain a clear understanding of his potential. Rivera’s advice for the team that ultimately drafts McCarthy is clear, “Is he that kind of guy that’s going to be that’s going to sit off to the side manage then all of a sudden develop that ability to take over the game and win it for you in crunch time?” Earlier, Johnson also expressed his reservations about McCarthy’s value.

McCarthy’s talent analysis against competitors

A few days ago, on the YouTube show Undisputed, Johnson had made an unapologetic statement about the McCarthy fever. Downplaying the craze around the quarterback and his rising stocks, he stated, “I didn’t see anything in college football that made me go, ‘Oh my God that’s the number three pick in the draft.'”

To further justify his point, he concluded with his analysis that McCarthy’s talent is “not equal compared to the other top two prospects of the 2024 NFL draft, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels. Last season, the numbers that McCarthy amassed were 2,991 yards and 22 decent touchdowns with four interceptions that led to a QB rating of 88.2% and a 3rd rank.

Daniels overtakes McCarthy with a QB rating of 95.6%, along with 3,812 yardage, 40 touchdowns, and four interceptions. On the other hand, the USC Trojans quarterback, Williams, even though he lags with a QB rate of 82.4%, beats McCarthy with 3,633 yards with 30 touchdowns and five interceptions.

McCarthy’s next landing spot revolves around three options: New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings, and Denver Broncos. Whichever program pursues the quarterback, Rivera’s thumb rule must be well taken care of for sustained success.
