With the rumors of the Chargers looking to sign New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, there are reports that new Head Coach Jim Harbaugh and General Manager Joe Hortiz are reportedly considering a trade involving their star defensive force. The 32-year-old Khalil Mack has been the center of attention for the Chargers. With the final year of his contract looming, Mack is set for more than $20 million next season – a price that the Chargers’ new regime does not want to pay.

The 33-year-old Chargers veteran linebacker has been a cornerstone in the team’s defense roster. However, as per Harbaugh’s strategic move, he may be looking to reshape the lineup and build a team capable of challenging Kansas City next season.

Khalil Mack’s future hangs in the balance

Renowned for his success in both college football and the NFL, Harbaugh’s decision, paired with Hortiz’s, sets the stage for a transformative era. The Chargers’ decision to challenge the dominance of the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West propels the duo to make tough calls. One of the strong decisions involves the potential departure of star edge rusher Mack.

It was back in 2022, with his debut season with the Chargers, that he came over from the Bears and logged 8 sacks. Besides, Mack has gained the spotlight in 2023 by reaching a career-high, securing 17 sacks in 2023. He also achieved 22 quarterback hits, 21 tackles for loss, and 10 QB knockdowns.

However, the Chargers are hesitant to commit to the hefty amount of $23.25 million to keep Mack for the upcoming season. Now, if the Chargers can trade him, it will be the ideal scenario for them. The Baltimore Ravens are one team that has been linked and will have an opening on the edge if they don’t re-sign Jadeveon Clowney. The 49ers are another side that could look to sign Mack, given that Chase Young hasn’t had the desired impact. But if the Chargers fail to trade him and still want him gone, they could take a hit.

If the Chargers decide to release Khalil Mack, they will still have to pay him $23.25 million, which he is due to make in the final year of his contract. Meanwhile, the Chargers are also looking to bolster their ranks.

The Chargers have also been linked with New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who recently said, “I definitely wouldn’t be against it,” when asked about linking up with Jim Harbaugh in an interview on Up and Adams.

Another reason for moving out Khalil Mack could be that Harbaugh’s Chargers have also been grappling with being over $40 million above the salary cap. Hence, parting ways with Mack, even though challenging, could become a necessary move to create financial flexibility.

The Chargers’ salary cap conundrum

With a $27.5 million overage heading into 2024, after the tumultuous season that cost both general manager Tom Telesco and former head coach Brandon Staley’s jobs, the Chargers attempt to untangle the financial web. Under such circumstances, the future of high-profile players comes under scrutiny.

Despite a stellar season, Mack faces the uncertainty of potential cut and trade. Joining him are players including Joey Bosa, Keenan Allen, and Mike Williams. However, in the case of Mack, the linebacker is in the final year of his contract, which makes his path even more challenging, increasing the chances of getting replaced, which would save the Chargers $23.2 million.

However, refusing to be dismayed by the current scenario, in a recent interview, Mack claimed, I know what I bring to the game, understanding that I want to be a team guy. Whatever team, I’m not in control of that right now.” With a new coaching structure in place under Harbaugh’s mentorship, the Chargers may attempt to negotiate a restructured deal in alignment with the team’s cap constraints.
