The Michigan Wolverines have now found themselves at the crossroads of dilemma. Now that legendary coach Jim Harbaugh has moved out of the program, Sherrone Moore is in the spotlight. However, the Wolverines members including the former ones like wide-receiver Braylon Edwards are still skeptical about Moore fitting into Harbaugh’s shoes. 

Even though Moore has been exposed to a rough start with the team in jeopardy since the former coach’s exit, the 21st head coach in Michigan Football history has confirmed his mantra of proceeding ahead with the Wolverines. 

Moore’s challenge of filling Harbaugh’s position

Edwards played for Michigan from 2002 and 2004 and even though he did not have the privilege to be under the mentorship of Harbaugh who joined in 2015, he holds an immense respect for the coaching icon. Recently, he shared his views on the current situation in the Wolverines now that Moore is at the helm. In his opinion, “I think Sherrone Moore has done a decent job so far in hiring new coaches but it’s tough to replace the icon. It’s one thing to replace the coach, it’s another thing to replace an icon. Jim Harbaugh is bigger than Michigan and he was bigger than Michigan.”

Since Harbaugh has been deeply ingrained in the fabric of Michigan football, the pressure and expectations remain high. It is not that he has only been part of the Wolverines that witnessed success. Having served as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Stanford University, and the University of San Diego, Harbaugh sets lofty expectations for Moore. Hence, for the 38-year-old newly appointed coach, it is going to be a great challenge.     

Instability in the Wolverines’ situation

Harbaugh led the Wolverines to win the College Football Playoff National Championship in 2023, the first undisputed win of the team since 1948. Furthermore, he has guided Michigan to five 10-win seasons and seven bowl games. With Moore taking charge after the legend’s departure, he is confident about his plans and confidently stated, “I got mad love for him and will always respect him. I’ve learned so much from him but I’m going to run the program my way”. But unfortunately, the current situation of the team seems not to be in his favor.

Players failing to find confidence in the absence of Harbaugh have joined the transfer portal, the latest additions being reserve defensive tackle Reece Atteberry and junior safety Keon Abb. Other than the players, the coaches have also sought positions in other teams. As many as 18 players, including star QB JJ McCarthy, have declared for the NFL draft. 

Hence, the journey ahead is uncertain for Sherrone Moore. The expectations are both a burden and an opportunity for the coach to prove his potential and to become one himself other than replacing the coaching legend, Jim Harbaugh.
