This time Caleb Williams soared to the headlines not for creating any records on the field but for flaunting pink nails and a phone case at the recent game of March Madness. Yes, you read that right. Despite being touted as a generational talent, controversy surrounded the USC quarterback for his personal choices that cast a shadow over his draft prospects. For years, Williams has been hailed as the No.1 pick and so, every move he makes seems to invite scrutiny.

Amidst the backlash, former NFL quarterback, Robert Griffin III voiced his support for Williams. In his plea to accept him for who he is, Griffin III posted a tweet where he wrote, “Let Caleb Williams be Caleb Williams. Ain’t nothing wrong with him wearing pink fingernail polish and having a pink phone case. Quite frankly, if he goes to Chicago then Bears fans should be rocking whatever he is. Stop the hate and accept him for who he is.”

The controversy heated up so much that questions loom around Williams’ “conduct.”However, the player seemed to be unapologetic about his choices when he made an appearance at the USC women’s basketball game. Jack McGuire, a Barstool employee who avidly covers college football, pointed out Williams’ action as “crazy”, to which Williams responded in a tweet where he said, “Your pfp is crazy ngl”. Interestingly, there lies a story behind the player painting his nails.  

Truth behind Williams’ fondness for nail paint

Those who have followed the quarterback for quite a long time now know that Williams has been using his nails as a form of expression for years. When he won the Heisman trophy during his 2022-2023 college football season, he was spotted wearing nail paint. Defeating C.J.Stroud and leading USC to a huge win over Notre Dame, during the contest attention was drawn to his freshly painted nails. It flaunted the message, “F—NDXX”.

Similarly, before the 2022 Pac-12 Championship game, he chose to paint the words “F**k Utah” and garnered heavy revulsion from social media. When he went to a contest against Washington State, he painted the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline on his nails. Williams even shared how he had developed a fondness for painting his fingers and said, “My mom was my inspiration. I mean, she’s been doing nails since I could remember.” 

Hence, Caleb Williams’ NSFW messages find expression through his nail paint. With the almost certainty that the Chicago Bears will draft him, it is now to be seen what message the quarterback has for his followers and haters. All eyes are on the nails!
