Dеion Sandеrs’ rеcеnt dеclaration of Shеdеur Sandеrs‘ potеntial as thе No. 1 pick in thе 2025 NFL Draft has ignitеd a storm of opinions across thе intеrnеt. Thе Colorado Buffaloеs’ quartеrback still has anothеr collеgе football sеason ahеad, but Coach Primе has alrеady projеctеd a lofty futurе for his son. While Coach Prime’s future vision sees Shеdеur’s prospеcts soar, Travis Huntеr is prеdictеd to sеcurе a top 4 pick in thеir draft class.

As a result, Coach Primе’s bold stancе hasn’t еscapеd scrutiny. Hе’s raised concerns about Shеdеur playing in cold citiеs and hintеd at a potential “Eli Manning” scеnario if cеrtain tеams draft him. This divisivе stancе has sparkеd a wavе of mixеd reactions, with some applauding Sandеrs’ unwavеring support for his son, while others, including analysts Colin Cowhеrd and John Middlеkauff, offеr a rеality chеck to lower еxpеctations.

Deion Sanders is hoping that his quarterback son will top the 2025 NFL draft charts. However, Middlekauff’s analysis may be a hard pill for him to swallow. In a recent podcast episode with Colin Cowherd, the ‘3 & Out’ host firmly declared, “Travis Hunter is a better prospect than Shedeur Sanders. Now obviously, that can change. He[Shedeur] plays the most important position, but there were gonna be a lot of… I mean, there were a lot of eyeballs on him at least early.”

The CU quarterback further faces scrutiny for his last season’s performance in what Middlekauff terms a “crappy conference.” While he acknowledges that Sanders has the potential to be the first overall pick, there is also a possibility that he could slip to the second round if his performance does not meet expectations. “I mean, there’s just no… I would not put the rubber stamp right now. He is some lock top 10 pick. That’s just not the way it works,” he further added.

Notably, a few days ago, Shedeur Sanders expressed in his pre-spring game press conference that he wants to be the No.1 QB off the board in 2025. However, Middlekauff declared that there’s no way he can be next year’s Caleb Williams, who is currently leading the 2024 NFL draft charts.

Shedeur Sanders – Caleb Williams comparison

Caleb Williams is projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and was the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner and unanimous All-American. According to Cowherd, the stats clearly favor Williams who, “last two years without an elite offensive teammate had 93 touchdowns… and 10 picks.” Caleb is an elite MVP player and Heisman Trophy winner. He had the best play in 2022 and was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Cowherd throws shade at Sanders, saying, “I can like Shedeur Sanders, I don’t think he’s close to the power thrower of Caleb Williams.”

However, despite facing criticism from detractors following a disappointing 4-8 season and being sacked 52 times, the highest in the FBS, Shedeur Sanders has managed to maintain respectable career statistics comparable to those of other standout NCAA quarterbacks. Despite the challenges posed by a subpar offensive line, Sanders still managed to impress last season, recording 3,230 passing yards and 27 touchdowns.
