Drake Maye is set to mark his territory by clinching the spot that JJ McCarthy overtook in the QB market. Just a couple of weeks back, several teams ranked JJ McCarthy higher than Drake Maye, mainly because of the ever-increasing hype around the Michigan QB. Hardly anyone expected the hype to backfire, but it did. Amidst the cutthroat competition, teams started losing hope of drafting McCarthy, adjusting their attention back to Drake Maye.

The Washington Commanders are one of them. The only advantage they have? Pick No.2, where they can draft any QB they want, except the first-round pick. To make the mammoth decision a bit less complicated, the Washington Commanders hosted the top-30 visit, where they invited the top 30 players to visit their campus. Following those initial visits, the Commanders are now moving on with the second round of interviews of players who piqued their interest and one of the earliest names in Drake Maye. With this, Drake Maye is not only posing as a threat to JJ McCarthy’s position above him in the 2024 NFL draft but also as a major competition to Jayden Daniels, who is predicted to be the original pick of the Commanders at No.2.

Maye is set to pay the Commanders a visit on April 16-17. However, the Commanders will also host Jayden Daniels on April 15th, per Ian Rapoport. But that doesn’t lessen the threat looming over Daniels about losing his coveted No.2 chance to get drafted, as the Commanders have also met Maye before his Pro Day.

While Maye and Daniels might battle for the pick, they will surely not underestimate their fellow competitor, JJ McCarthy, since he too is a QB the Commanders are considering.

JJ McCarthy the behind-the-scenes competitor

The hype surrounding Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye being Commanders pick is decent, and so is McCarthy’s hype around joining the Commanders. ESPN’s Matt Miller was the one who initially stoked the fire of McCarthy being the second-best quarterback in this year’s class. Per his conversations with various NFL teams, McCarthy is a legitimate candidate to go No. 2 overall.

“Ruling out McCarthy in Washington would be foolish based on league-wide intel surrounding the quarterbacks,” Miller reported, adding that general manager Adam Peters, head coach Dan Quinn, and OC Kliff Kingsbury all would have a good say in it. Hence, now with McCarthy’s pick, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels’s pick also remain the top-most intriguing questions of the NFL draft 2024.
