At this point, the Vikings are practically backed up in a corner and one way out is to “overpay,” as predicted by their former General manager Rick Spielman. Another is to throw in the towel for drafting JJ McCarthy. While they still have some resources left to wager, the Minnesota Vikings are not too keen on resorting to the latter option. So will Spielman’s predictions turn true at the end of the day, or rather, the draft season?

Kevin O’Connell does not have many windows left to explore other options, especially after Kirk Cousins shook hands with the Falcons for the 4-year, $180 million contract. JJ McCarthy is his safest bet since his draft stocks are still soaring the second-highest, followed by Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels if they fail to get his hands on McCarthy. However, is O’Connell and the front office’s obsession with drafting McCarthy a tad too much, especially with their original draft pick being at No. 11?

3 and Out’s John Middlekauff not only firmly believes in it, but also thinks of it as utter “bull**it”. The two reasons are very simple. “When you start getting further down the draft and you go, ‘This team will do whatever it takes to get this player’, I got two things. One you have a very leaky front office and that is not a way to run a draft room or two. You’re throwing out a lot of bull**it to throw people off the scent,” Middlekauff opined his unfiltered thoughts since he also has Rick Spielman’s words backing him up.

Tony Pauline also opined that “The Vikings are desperate for a QB,” further backing up Speilman’s words. Yet, the dire need for a reliable QB in the Vikings locker room leads the Connell and Co. to two ways: either the “overpay” to draft up to draft McCarthy or to settle for Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels if they’re available till pick No.11. However, it will still be a rocky road ahead for the Vikings.

The fierce competitors of the Vikings

Even if the Vikings do strike a deal with either the Cardinals at the fourth overall pick, or with the Chargers at the fifth overall pick, it won’t bring much relief to them, since the overall pick No. 2, the Washington Commanders, and the overall No. 3, the New England Patriots, are also reported to be heavily interested in drafting JJ McCarthy.

The tale of Patriots de facto manager Eliot Wolf being “in love” with the idea of drafting JJ McCarty is a widely-known public affair. Hence, the Patriots drafting JJ McCarthy as the No.3 overall is a move in several mock drafts. Speaking of mock drafts, they are divided on the idea of the Commanders drafting McCarthy. Some strongly believe that the Commanders are interested in drafting McCarthy, while others like Mel Keiper are “not convinced” of the Commanders drafting the QB.
