The protesting saga continues! As the NIL lawsuit intensifies with each unveiled facade, the list of people expressing resentment toward the outdated laws is piling up. Chip Kelly’s name is the next one to be added. Following their historic win in the LA Bowl, as it was the first win for Pac-12 in the history of the Bowl, Kelly gets the pedestal to voice out his thoughts. Safe to say, he chose to target the already-at-gunpoint NIL and transfer portal issues of the NCAA.
The seven states have gotten the mighty task of addressing the flaws in the NCAA done. All that’s left now is to delve into the nuances and remove the root of it all, which the state judiciary is onto. Kelly points out some of these finer details to make their job easier.

Chip Kelly is not hiding his displeasure

“College football is the greatest game out there and we need to protect it,” was the starting plea of Kelly’s dialogue on the Pat McAfee show. Kelly was ready to shoot his words directed right towards the officials. His primary concern, NIL deals with messing up the players’ performance too much. Asserting his thoughts on it, he said, “Right now it’s really free agency with no salary cap.” This ultimately leads the players to sign non-beneficial deals which are harming them more in the long run.
For the sake of maintaining their public image, players end up hiring agents. “People are giving up like 20% of their forever career earnings to these agents that are representing them,” disclosed Kelly. This, combined with the rule of coaches not allowed to discuss the money aspect directly with players, makes setting everything straight even more tedious. And when it came to the transfer portal, Kelly decided to take the road less traveled by opting for some snarky comments.

Kelly on the transfer portal

When criticizing the shortcomings of the transfer portal, Kelly chose the fun way. “If this doesn’t get changed Pat, someone’s going to transfer at halftime of a game and play for the other team in the second half,” snarkily joked the Bruins head coach.

Looking at the number of players entering the transfer portal at the end of this season, not to mention the decommits in the middle of the season, the joke threateningly seems to be a near-future for the organization, if changes aren’t made now. Well, the significance that Kelly’s words hold, along with all others, will only prove when the issues are addressed.
