Massachusetts General Hospital received a historic gift in favor of community health and health equity from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and his family’s foundation on Wednesday.

To continue a more than ten-year effort to advance health equity and finance research into sickle cell disease, a blood illness that mostly affects the Black population, Kraft contributed the means to Massachusetts General Hospital. According to Kraft, if sickle cell anemia was prevalent in “white people,” its “cure would have been found already.”

The chief aim of the billionaire is to curb the health equity gap. And also to make healthcare accessible to people who belong to minority communities. “When my beloved Myra got sick about 12 years ago, I saw the great care she got. We have the greatest hospitals in the world right here in Massachusetts,” Kraft said. “But then I started thinking, what if I was someone of modest means or a person of color, did I have the same access?”

Robert Kraft said, “Diversity equity, inclusion, that’s a big area today that isn’t being serviced properly.”

The gift will support the hospital’s permanent diversity, equity, and inclusion, which Kraft hopes the country will imitate. The gift, made possible by his family foundation and personal wealth, is the biggest one that Massachusetts General has ever received in support of health fairness.

The center now receives 12,000 donations each year, a figure that the hospital hopes to increase in the upcoming years, both in terms of total donations and donations from a wider range of people.
