The NFL preseason is in full swing with all teams having played at least two games so far. The Kansas City Chiefs have played two and won both albeit it by not the largest of margins. But one peculiar thing is the number of reps franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been taking through the course of these games. 

Most teams don’t risk playing their star athletes in such ties because of the risks of running into injuries. But the Chiefs seem to have no qualms with Mahomes getting some extra preseason snaps under his belt. 

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid though disclosed the thought process behind playing Mahomes in preseason ties.

While talking to the media Andy Reid said that the team was allowing Patrick Mahomes to play a considerable chunk of the Chiefs’ preseason ties to get him ready for the regular-season ties ahead.

“I think it’s good for Pat, but I also think it’s good for the offensive line and Pat to see how that’s going to work and get a feel for them, and for them to get a feel for him likewise,” Reid said via CBS Sports.

The Chiefs overhauled their O-line over the offseason to provide Patrick Mahomes with better pass protection, especially, after their Super Bowl LV debacle. 

“We’ve got some young guys, so I left them in with Chad (Henne) so they could get a little bit more extended work there. We’ve got two veterans on the left side, but all five of them are new, so you need to play and this gives us that opportunity.”

Mahomes played a total of 33 snaps during the Chiefs’ 17-10 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The quarterback though ended the night with no touchdowns to show for one interception.
