Football is a battlefield, and every player knows the risks that come with it. With bone-crushing tackles and high-speed collisions, the sport is not for the faint-hearted. The players brave the field, knowing that at any moment, they could fall victim to a terrifying injury that could change their lives forever.
But it’s not just broken bones and torn ligaments that they have to worry about. There is a growing concern about the long-term effects of football on the brain, with CTE being one of the most frightening consequences. And while the NFL has been at the forefront of this debate, incidents like cardiac arrests have begun to emerge even in college football. A young player from Utah State University went through a medical emergency on the field, but some hopeful news has emerged about the player’s health.

The Utah State University scare
A promising young player collapsed on the field, sending shockwaves through the team and the student body. It was a stark reminder of the dangers that come with playing this beloved sport. The normal risks of football are injuries like a concussion, a rolled ankle, or fractures. However, no one expects a player to collapse on the field due to “non-traumatic cardiac arrest.” Even more surprisingly, the player in question is just a freshman. Josh Davis, a wide receiver, has now been declared to be in fair condition and has even been taken off life support devices.
Utah State freshman WR Josh Davis suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest on the field and was taken to Logan Regional Hospital before later being transported to McKay-Dee Hospital:

After the initial scare, the response was swift with support staff responding strongly and ensuring that Davis got the necessary care. The university has even shared a picture of the wide receiver holding his thumb up to indicate his improving condition.
The incident was all the more shocking considering the player’s age, him being a freshman and just beginning his college football journey. Secondly, the eerie similarities to the Damar Hamlin incident that occurred in the NFL last season raise the question of whether cardiac failure could be another scary health risk to be associated with football.

Damar Hamlin suffers a similar incident
While cardiac arrests are not a common occurrence, this is the second time in a year that the NFL world has heard of this happening. The first was when it happened to the Buffalo Bills‘ safety, Damar Hamlin. Hamlin suffered a similar condition wherein he had a sudden cardiac arrest on the field in the middle of a game. He had to be rushed to the hospital and given immediate medical care. The incident shocked the NFL and the occurrence itself surprised everyone.

The fans are very concerned with these repeated occurrences. It is not at all normal for healthy youngsters to be collapsing due to cardiac arrests. This has become a huge cause of concern for professionals as well as amateurs. Football may be a beautiful game, but it’s a dangerous one too. It’s time for everyone involved to take a hard look at the risks and make the necessary changes to ensure that the players are protected, both on and off the field.
