“Every day is a workday for me” – Cam Newton Not Looking To Get Complacent

The New England Patriots created waves when they announced their decision to bring in 2015 NFL MVP, Cam Newton, on a short-term deal. The former Carolina Panthers man signed a one-year contract worth $1.5 million (excluding bonuses). Newton will be tasked with the enormous responsibility of replacing six-time Super Bowl winner and three-time NFL MVP, Tom Brady. As it seems, Newton is doing more than okay.
The former Heisman Trophy winner has been terrific throughout the ongoing preseason training camp. He’s built a good relationship with veteran Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman as well. Prior to the start of preseason, head coach Bill Belichick was adamant that Newton will be competing with 2019 NFL draft pick Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer for a starting spot. However, that seems to have changed in recent weeks.

“Absolutely not. Every day is a workday for me, and that label is not important to me right now because I know I have so much that I need to get better at, so much that I need to learn, so much that I need to be comfortable with. And throughout this process, that’s the last thing that I’m pretty much worried about. Knowing that there are certain things when I come to the line of scrimmage and it’s just not as firing, mentally, as I would want it to be, rather than other plays that may be called.

“I see a person like (Brian Hoyer) go to the line, and he’s just as sharp as it can be. From me asking him questions and he answered them and (Jarrett Stidham) and things like that, there’s things that I know I need to become better at. And until I get those things done, everything else is irrelevant,” Newton said via NFL Network.

Newton has dealt with some injury niggles during his final season in Carolina. The 31-year old seems determined to silence his doubters. Coach Bill Belichick had earlier said how he was ‘impressed’ by Cam’s dedication amidst preseason training. With Jarrett Stidham struggling with a hip injury of his own, many will say that Newton is more or less guaranteed to start in September. Nevertheless, this newfound humility is bound to do Cam some good in the long run.
