The Denver Broncos had a tough 2022 season. They weren’t able to maintain a good record and a lot of the blame was assigned to the quarterback, Russell Wilson. However, the Broncos also seemingly held the previous head coach, Nathaniel Hackett responsible. The organization ended up firing him. In his place, they’ve brought in Sean Payton as their new head coach and he seems to have a new strategy in his mind.

With his work cut out for him, Payton needs to make sure that his team can go on to become one of the best teams in the AFC. This means that Payton will need to beat his number-one rival in the AFC. A video of Payton speaking to Amanda Balionis went viral, revealing his thoughts on his biggest rivals.

It seems like Payton is aiming high for his first season in the AFC. In the past, Payton has only coached in the NFC, with different kinds of teams and okaying styles. Further, with his time in the AFC, he has made his target clear: The Kansas City Chiefs. While on the show, Payton voiced out what approach he’ll be taking in the AFC.

He spoke about the unfamiliarity of the division. The Broncos coach mentioned his systematic approach to the AFC as well as their biggest threat. Payton said, “It really starts within your division. You got to find a way to win your division. And right now, Kansas City is that team. That’s what we’re working on. Gosh, all this talk of work has me nervous that the Chiefs are doing something today, and you and I are golfing over margaritas.”

It would make sense for him to challenge the reigning Super Bowl champs. In the previous season with them, the Broncos had an interesting performance against the Chiefs.

Broncos vs. the Chiefs last season

The Broncos faced off against the Chiefs twice during the regular season. As the Broncos weren’t able to make the playoffs, they played against the Super Bowl champions once, as is the format of the game. The game was an eye-opening defeat for the Broncos. The game took place on 12th December 2022. The Broncos lost this game with a margin of 28-34. Apart from this match-up, Payton has set his sights on the Chiefs for the obvious reason that he wants to take on last year’s winners. With only an NFC coaching resume, Payton has his work cut out for him.

While it is obvious that the Broncos need to have a better season than last year, Payton seems to be aiming for the top. With his positive spirit, it only remains to be seen what he is able to do with his team.
