It’s been a while since Drew Brees was in the news after the quarterback’s retirement in 2021. However, a new and troubling Drew Brees injury update has come about. The Super Bowl winner had a near-fatal lightning encounter while filming a commercial in Venezuela. But fortunately, Brees is doing fine after confirming that he wasn’t directly struck.

The former Saints quarterback was shooting a commercial for PointsBet sports betting company. The location in Venezuela around the Catatumbo River is a high lightning-density area. And the shoot location didn’t look like the safest place to be in the videos that circulated immediately after the lightning strike on Twitter. ESPN correspondent for the Saints, Katherine Terrell, tweeted the good news for the worried Saints fans.

“I just texted Drew Brees. He said he’s good, and that he did not get struck by lightning,” Terrell tweeted much to the relief of the legendary quarterback’s fan base. The Los Angeles Chargers fan base also heaved a sigh of relief for obvious lightening pun related reasons. “Wow, he’s still getting revenge on the Chargers,” Purple Insider reporter Matthew Coller jokingly replied to Terrell’s update.

What made Drew Brees’ fans worried?

Drew Brees is the ambassador of PointsBet Sports Book and was almost part of a freak accident during the commercial. There is some speculation that this could have been a part of the ad shoot. However, the lightning strike looked deadly in the viral video posted by Rafael Hernandez on Twitter. The video shows the New Orleans Saints legend getting ready for the shot when the thunderous clapping sound and light flashes bring the video to an abrupt end.

PointsBet SportsBook released an official statement that they will continue to monitor the situation through the upcoming week. “We are in communication with Brees’ team,” the official report said. “At this stage we will not be making any further comment,” it said in conclusion. However, NewOrleansFootball.com writer Nick Underhill gave the necessary positive update on Drew Brees. It all turned out to be a “buzzing” marketing campaign, as made clear by Brees on PointsBet‘s official Twitter handle.

Drew Brees won the Super Bowl in 2010 with HC Sean Payton to bring the franchise’s first championship title. Post-retirement, Drew appears on football panels from time to time. Drew tweeted on Monday about his plans to go to a secret location for the shooting of this commercial for PointsBet. However, the lightning didn’t harm him, and the NFL superstar is doing just fine.
