GM John Lynch-led San Francisco 49ers raised eyebrows when they decided to trade up and acquire the third overall pick at the 2021 NFL Draft from the Miami Dolphins. Coach Kyle Shanahan’s organization endured a tough outing with Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback last season.
Given their move and considering the hottest properties in the draft class, they could look to bring in a young shot-caller in the form of Justin Fields (Ohio State) or Zach Wilson (BYU) this summer. But what does that mean for the long-term future of 29-year-old Jimmy Garoppolo? Here’s what a certain ESPN insider has to say on the same.

Jimmy Garoppolo will stay put in The Bay this summer
#Patriots are not pursuing #49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo, per sources. Cap space isn’t there and obviously Cam Newton will return. Additionally, the draft is flush with QBs. No Jimmy GQ reunion for the Pats in foreseeable future.

Former Eastern Illinois University star Jimmy Garoppolo arrived in the NFL back in 2014. Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots drafted him, and he largely played backup to the legendary Tom Brady between 2014-17. Jimmy G won two Super Bowl rings during his stay in Boston.
However, he opted to sign for the San Francisco 49ers in the summer of 2017. Garoppolo played a pivotal role for the Niners in 2019 as they finished runner-up to Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. But his 2020 campaign was forgettable at best. Despite a poor showing last season, GM John Lynch and coach Shanahan had publicly backed Jimmy G ahead of the 2021 NFL season.

But recent events indicate otherwise. After trading up with the Dolphins, reports stated that a possible return for Jimmy Garoppolo to New England is on the cards. However, league insider Jordan Schultz slammed those rumors stating the Patriots are more than happy to work with Cam Newton in 2021.
In fact, coach Bill Belichick and Co. are also keeping a close eye on the 2021 NFL Draft with a view to select Alabama prospect Mac Jones in April. So, as of now, if Wilson or Fields do arrive in San Francisco, Jimmy G could risk dropping to the bench.
