New Orleans Saints Acquire Three-Time Pro Bowler Quarterback After Re-Signing Jameis Winston

The New Orleans Saints have filled in that quarterback void way before the NFL Draft. After re-signing the one-year Saints QB Jameis Winston, the franchise also acquired the former Cincinnati Bengals QB, Andy Dalton. It seems the Saints will not be worrying much about the QB spot during the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Saints signed a one-year contract with $3 million guaranteed and $6 million with incentives (based on his play-time), with the three-time pro bowler Andy Dalton, reported NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Tuesday.

The signing comes a week after the New Orleans Saints signed Jameis Winston on a $28 million worth two-year deal. Although the former Tampa Bay’s hottest take was signed as a starter for the Saints, Dalton is presumed to be his trusted backup. Winston, who comes off from a season-ending ACL tear, will be questioned for his preparedness at the start of the season, however, the Saints are already equipped for it.

The 34-year-old veteran Andy Dalton would be a reliable option for the Saints if they face something similar to their 2021 season when the team suffered a huge setback at the QB spot.

Is Dalton the perfect backup?

The Red Rifle after being a nomad for the past couple of years finds his place in New Orleans. His nine-year stint with the Cincinnati Bengals remains the highlight of his career during which he won three Pro Bowls but failed to win a playoff game with the franchise.

Dalton signed for the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 as the backup for Dak Prescott. However, Dak’s injury that season gave Dalton the opportunity to start nine games. The Pro Bowler was signed by the Chicago Bears as a starter in the 2021 offseason. But then the franchise Drafted Justin Fields in the first round, forcing Dalton to the backup role again.

Dalton started six games for the Bears the previous season, during which he recorded a 63.1 percent pass completion for 1,515 yards scoring eight touchdowns with nine interceptions and a 3-3 record. With Dalton coming into the picture, the versatile Taysom Hill is presumed to take up a tight end role.
