The 2020 NFL campaign ended on a sour note for Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The NFC North old boys lost in the NFC Championship Game at the hands of eventual Super Bowl winners, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This was their second consecutive loss at this stage, following 2019’s defeat to the San Francisco 49ers.

Rodgers and his parent organization were both involved in a heated standoff this summer. The veteran quarterback was looking to move on from Wisconsin, but Packers GM Brian Gutekunst refused to let him leave. After an extended absence and a lot of controversies, it seems like he will continue for Green Bay in 2021.

But Rodgers is adamant that he wants a strong roster to support his Super Bowl ambitions. One player he publicly advocated for was former teammate and Super Bowl XLV winner, Clay Matthews.

Aaron Rodgers along with Green Bay Packers teammates, David Bakhtiari and Randall Cobb, all went public in their effort to reunite with free agent Clay Matthews.
While some suggested that this social media move was a joke, or more specifically as a precursor to a one-day retirement contract. But further reports suggested that this was a serious move from the three Packers’ players.

I have no idea what Aaron Rodgers and Randall Cobb were doing with their IG posts about bringing back Clay Matthews the other day, but GM Brian Gutekunst said: "We've had no discussions about that."

However, in a recent conversation with ESPN reporter Rob Demovsky, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst revealed that senior management has had ‘no discussions with regards to a potential short-term deal for Matthews.
The 6-time Pro Bowler last played in the NFL two years ago while with NFC West franchise, Los Angeles Rams. He was released in the summer of 2020 and has been without a team ever since.

It will be interesting to see if GM Gutekunst gives in to the pressure from inside the dressing room and brings in Matthews as a morale booster. Watch this space for more.
