Patrick Mahomes recently had a say on the NFL overtime rules, which came under heavy criticism after the Divisional Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills. The Chiefs took possession of the ball after winning the overtime toss, after which Patrick Mahomes connected with star tight end Travis Kelce for a game-winning touchdown pass.

However, after the game, Mahomes stated that it “stinks” to see that Josh Allen did not get a chance to go. The game ended in a 42-36 score in favor of the Chiefs.

Subsequently, the very next day the quarterback stood by the NFL overtime rules, which he believes, promotes the team spirit of the sport. “It is what it is to me,” he told KCSP radio. “Obviously you want to have a chance if you don’t get a chance to get the ball, but that’s been the rule for a long time.”

“It’s a team game,” he added. “You have to be able to get a stop on defense and do stuff like that as well. It’s not about the offense every single time.” He also mentioned that every team is aware of the rules beforehand and that everyone knows what is going to go down if the game ends in a tie. And so they have to prepare themselves to resist the opponents’ offense.

Speaking of the outcomes of the overtime toss, Patrick Mahomes has not always been on the lucky side of it. During his 2019 AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots, the game advanced to overtime, and the toss was won by Tom Brady. The Patriots quarterback led his team to victory in the opening drive, eliminating the Chiefs from the playoffs.

However, Patrick stood by the rules then just as he did after his win against the Bills. But the Chiefs head coach Andy Reid holds a counter opinion to the prevailing rules. He believes that both sides should get equal opportunities to score.

“It was great for us last night, but is it great for the game, which is the most important thing we should all be looking out for?” Reid said. “To make things equal, it probably needs to be able to hit both offenses, both defenses.”
