Earlier this week, New Orleans Saints quarterback, Drew Brees, copped a lot of flak in the NFL community. He wrote on Twitter about disagreeing with anybody disrespecting the national flag of the USA. He declared that he often envisions his grandfathers, who fought in the Second World War, when he hears the national anthem or sees the flag. Brees revealed that both of them risked their lives to protect America and tried to make it “a better place.”

Suffice to say, not many people appreciated Brees’ sense of patriotism. Former NFL player Shannon Sharpe expressed his disappointment in the quarterback’s words. He said, “What makes the black man’s fight so hard is people like Drew Brees. If you can’t get a guy who grew up with blacks in the locker room from pee-wee, high school, college and the NFL to understand our plight, then who will?”

It appeared that Drew Brees completely missed the point of the kneeling protest. Sharpe even made a startling revelation where any African-American soldiers in WW2 were segregated from the Caucasian soldiers. Additionally, none of those soldiers were celebrated, unlike their Caucasian counterparts, after the war.

According to Sharpe, African-American soldiers were often caught, beaten or killed. He also made a surprising revelation about George Washington. As it turns out, the first US President signed a military act in 1792, effectively banning African-Americans from joining the military. The good news was that Washington later rescinded the order.

Now getting a little more emotional, Sharpe concluded, “You automatically assume that a black man should feel the same pride for the flag as you and your grandfathers? It makes me upset that some think that only the white served in the military.”

“If a black man can’t have the same freedom and liberty as the white, what good is the flag?”
