REPORTS: Jimmy Garoppolo Set to Become Most Expensive Back-Up QB in the NFL

Jimmy Garoppolo is finally back to the base. Despite an eventful offseason surrounding his trade rumors, the San Francisco 49ers have decided to keep their long-time quarterback intact. Garoppolo will stay for one more season with the Niners as a back option for Trey Lance, making him one of the best options even if anything goes south.
This announcement was made on Monday with Garoppolo agreeing to a restructured contract that will pay him $6.5 million in salary for the upcoming season. Along with other perks and incentives, the deal can be pushed to as much as $16 million.

This contract includes trade non-trade and non-tag clauses which assure Garoppolo his right to choose whether to leave them or stay with the team in case of any trade in the future. As a result, Garoppolo has become one of the most expensive backup QBs in the NFL.
This decision was made in the wake of announcing a 53-man roster on Tuesday. If he would have stayed with the team beyond this date, the quarterback was destined to make $27 million.
This turned out to be one of the main reasons why his trade was never executed. However, this restructuring of the contract helped both parties remain on the same page. More than Garoppolo, it was the Niners, who benefited from the deal.

The 30-year-old quarterback was one of the most successful quarterbacks for the Niners in recent years. As always, Garoppolo is a talented signal-caller, but his frequent tryst with injuries makes him wait on the sidelines. After executing the recent deal, Niners owner Jed York revealed that the team was in no rush to trade the quarterback.

What he has achieved for the team in the previous season makes him stand apart. Thus, having him in the locker room is never a matter of concern. “I watched it with Joe (Montana) and Steve (Young), and I realize the salary cap is different today than having no salary cap. But we’ve said it before: We’re happy to keep Jimmy. We’re happy to have him on the roster. And if that’s the case, then that’s the case.” he said to the reporters.
