Sean Payton, the former NFL quarterback and former head coach of the New Orleans Saints, has indicated ‘interest’ in returning to the gridiron sidelines as the Carolina Panthers are once again without a head coach. Payton stated on a recent broadcast of Colin Cowherd’s show that it is “attractive” to foster parent a club that has a top-tier quarterback in place.

On an earlier Saints podcast, he also mentioned how the Saints’ Week 2 game against the Bucs made him miss coaching for the first time since stepping down in January and if the ‘right situation’ arises, he would join the NFL in 2023.

The Panthers must compensate the Saints before signing Payton

Payton is presently working as an

NFL analyst for Fox Sports. After successfully completing 16 seasons with the Saints, the famed former quarterback stepped down as head coach.

In the 2009 season, Sean Payton led the

Saints to their first-ever Super Bowl triumph. Though Payton left the position in January, he is still under contract with the Saints.

So, if the

Panthers want to have a contractual talk with him, they must first compensate the Saints.

Sean Payton thinks the Panthers are ‘fosterable’

The Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper fired previous head coach Matt Rhule in less than three seasons of a seven-year contract. Rhule had an 11-27 record, including a 1-4 record this season.

His failure was accelerated by the team’s inability to sign a franchise quarterback. Rhule began each of his three seasons with a different starting quarterback, and his departure from the team was inevitable!

Though Sean Payton believes the Panthers’ quarterback situation is ‘fosterable’ because the club has a ‘top-tier’ quarterback in Baker Mayfield. “I think it’s attractive,” Payton commented before discussing how rare it is for a job to become available when a team already has a top-tier quarterback in place. “It’s almost a unicorn, the open job with the great QB, waiting for you to come in and be the foster parent,” he explained. “Usually, generally speaking, it’s somewhat broken.”
