The NFL takes care of players who have helped grow their league’s popularity. Furthermore, some players have stood out more than the others. One of the most controversially prominent players of the league to this day remains to be OJ Simpson. While he was involved in court cases and was sent to prison, he was released in 2017. Since then, Juice has been the face of different incidents. He was once at the center of his mansion being destroyed. There were also some interesting situations with the Kardashians as well as gambling comments. However, despite multiple controversies, Simpson is still benefiting from being an ex-NFL player.

The ex-Buffalo Bills running back still exacts a hefty amount as his pension from the NFL. Even after all the controversies he’s been buried in, it seems like Juice’s controversies don’t outweigh his contributions to the NFL.

Juice had a prolific career on the football field. OJ played nine seasons with the Buffalo Bills as well as two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. During his career, Simpson had a total of 14,368 yards in his career. Furthermore, he also had a total of 76 touchdowns to go along with the yards he ran and caught. The running back was also accepted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1985. With a career as productive as his, the NFL has gone on to take proper care of Simpson after his retirement. The ex-running back receives up to $25,000 every month from the NFL.

Interestingly, that amounts to a limit of $300,000 a year just from the NFL as a pension. However, with a net worth of about $7 million, the ex-running back hardly needs it.

Furthermore, this benefit is not something that only Simpson enjoys. The NFL remains one of the rare sporting leagues that go on to offer its ex-players a pension. However, the method of its offerings has always been shrouded in mystery.

The mysterious NFL pension system

Systems of pensions are very rare in organizations that are rooted in profit. However, the league takes care of its own. To start off with, an NFL player has to have played at least three seasons before being eligible for a pension. Furthermore, the more they play, the more credits they receive from the league. Building on that, the more games and seasons a player plays, the more credit they would amass. And their pension is directly dependent on the credits they’ve earned.

Furthermore, each player can avail of their pension when they turn 55 years of age. Trying to avail it earlier just results in a penalty with a reduced amount. Conversely, if a player chooses to avail of it after the age of 65, the benefits increase significantly. With the kind of rigorous career that Simpson has had, it would make sense that he earns a hefty amount from the league.

While Simpson still has his own assets and earnings, his pension contributes grandly to his income. However, after his prolific NFL career, Simpson has earned the amount of compensation he receives from the NFL.
