‘The Other Guy Got to Play’: Former Patriots QB Reveals How He Felt When Tom Brady Replaced Him and Won the Super Bowl

Tom Brady has an incredible legacy in the NFL, second to none. However, we cannot talk about Brady’s career without addressing how it all started. The legend of TB12 began with Drew Bledsoe, former New England Patriots quarterback suffering a brutal injury. Brady stepped up to fill his shoes. And the rest is history.

In his twenty-year career, Tom Brady has won seven Super Bowls and played in ten. But the first win will always remain close to his heart. Fresh off the Draft; picked up incredibly late; despite a terrific playing career at Michigan State, Brady entered the NFL to absolutely no fanfare. Right now, his name is synonymous with the sport.

However, if there’s one man who wished he was in Brady’s shoes right now, it’d be Drew Bledsoe. Bledsoe actually led the Patriots to the 2001 Super Bowl, but an unfortunate injury forced him to miss most of the season. When Brady stepped in, he more than just delivered. In a real life Cinderella story, Brady led the Patriots to the Super Bowl in his debut season.

Twenty years later, ESPN+ produced a documentary called Man in the Arena; the first episode aired recently. In the episode, Drew Bledsoe revealed his genuine emotions about seeing Brady lift the Super Bowl. While he remains proud, he is still a little disheartened.

“I remember being excited for our guys, but at the same time, kind of internally a little disheartened. Like, man, battled through a lot of stuff to try to get to this point and now arrived here, but the other guy got to play.”

“By about 11 o’clock the next morning, I was sitting on a chairlift skiing in Whitefish, Montana. And I remember I got on the chairlift and I was by myself. I put my goggles on, my helmet, and I sat there. I was all by myself, and I just cried.” Bledsoe recalled, “I just sat there, and it was the first time I just kind of let it all come crashing down on me.”

Brady himself has a very positive message for Drew. “When I look at what Drew went through, I look at someone who was very unselfish. I think that lesson’s embedded in me,” said Brady. “There’s nothing you can accomplish in football without everyone else, without the team, without the coaches, without the fans, without your families. It’s the ultimate team sport.”
