After the Dallas Cowboys shockingly released linebacker Jaylon Smith, his first preference for a franchise was the Green Bay Packers. He has been emphatic about his decision to play with the veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Smith who got released by the Cowboys on Tuesday didn’t last in the market for long. His inclination to play with Aaron Rodgers made him reject offers from Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to play with his favourite QB in the NFL, rejecting a chance to play with Tom Brady as well.

Jaylon Smith prefers Aaron Rodgers over Tom Brady

Smith racked up a smashing spell from 2018 to 2020 when he started every game for the Cowboys. He registered an enormous amount of 254 solo tackles over that period, and made the Pro Bowl in 2019.

However, in 2021, Smith started just two out of the four games this season. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy revealed little about his decision, calling Smith’s release a “big picture” move. Furthermore, Smith could be a perfect fit as a linebacker to the Packers as the franchise have been struggling on their defensive end by giving away at least 17 points in every game this season.

“I like him as a person, and he’s a super friendly, happy guy, even on the field,” Rodgers said on rumours about Jaylon Smith’s Green Bay Packers signing. “He’s a fierce competitor, but he always has a smile on his face. So I appreciate that about him, and it was just more of a respectful competitor-to-competitor conversation after the game (Packers at Cowboys in 2019).”

He further adds, “I haven’t heard if anything’s been done yet, but in general, I think anytime you add a veteran player to a team, there’s the possibility of a guy getting an opportunity who’s played football before at a high level, and sometimes it just takes an environment switch for some of those guys to play their best football.”
